The SourcePoint 10 is a two-way concentric stand-mount made by MoFi Electronics, the work of Chief Speaker Designer Andrew Jones, whose earlier career took in KEF, Infinity, Pioneer, TAD and ELAC. It was introduced at Capital Audiofest. The design centres on a concentric driver, with the tweeter mounted in the middle of the woofer so that the cone works as a waveguide and the directivity of both units is matched.
Key specs that matter
A 10-inch woofer with a paper pulp cone on a corrugated surround carries a 1.25-inch soft-dome tweeter equipped with a wide-roll surround and a large-diameter voice coil. The crossover point sits at 1.6 kHz. MoFi quotes a frequency response of 42 Hz to 30 kHz and a sensitivity of 91 dB at 2.83 V and 1 m, with a nominal impedance of 8 ohm. Recommended amplifier power runs from 30 W up to a maximum input of 200 W. Each cabinet measures 368 x 572 x 422 mm with the grille fitted, or 406 mm deep without it, and weighs 21 kg.
Engineering and use context
The woofer and tweeter share a Twin-Drive motor in which high-flux neodymium magnets for woofer and tweeter are coupled together to form a fully symmetrical magnetic field. MoFi states that this removes flux modulation and so keeps intermodulation distortion very low, and copper sleeves in the motor further reduce nonlinear inductance. Internal cabinet volume is 50 litres and is vented through two large rear-firing ports. Its side, top, bottom and rear panels are 25 mm MDF reinforced by two interior braces, while the front baffle is 51 mm thick and sculpted with swept-back facets to control diffraction. The two-way crossover network uses inductors with laminated-steel cores. Connection is through 5-way binding posts, grilles attach magnetically, and the veneer is real wood, offered in satin walnut and satin black ash, set against a baffle painted satin black. MoFi gives five years of parts and labour cover, and the pair is priced at USD 2,999, reduced from USD 3,699.
Pairing
MoFi sells dedicated stands for the SourcePoint 10 as an optional extra.
Alternatives
The MoFi SourcePoint 8 is a smaller concentric stand-mount that carries over the Twin-Drive motor and faceted baffle, with an 8-inch driver in a cabinet of about half the volume.
