The L52 Classic is the smallest two-way box in the Classic range that JBL, the Northridge, California brand owned by HARMAN, builds around the look of its 1970 L100. It is a scaled-down version of the L82 Classic bookshelf model and was launched in 2021 at a UK price of GBP 999 per pair. Each unit ships as part of a mirror-imaged stereo pair, so the tweeters can be placed on the inner or outer edges of the two cabinets.

Key specs that matter

A 5.25 inch (133 mm) woofer, catalogued as JW135PW-4, uses a white Pure Pulp cone on a cast frame. Above it sits a 0.75 inch (20 mm) titanium dome tweeter, part JT020TI1-4, loaded by an acoustic lens waveguide. The crossover hands over at 2.8 kHz. JBL rates response at 47 Hz to 24 kHz at the -6 dB points, nominal impedance at 4 ohm and sensitivity at 85 dB for 2.83 V at 1 m. The cabinet measures 330.2 mm tall, 196.6 mm wide and 216.2 mm deep including the grille and weighs 5.0 kg, while a boxed pair ships at 13.8 kg. The warranty runs 5 years.

Engineering and use context

As a bass-reflex box, the L52 carries its tuned vent on the front baffle rather than on the back panel. The front and rear baffles are painted black, and the other panels carry a satin furniture-grade walnut veneer. The vintage-pattern Quadrex foam grille is offered in black, burnt orange or dark blue. A high-frequency level dial on the front panel next to the tweeter lets the owner trim the treble output, with 0 dB as the default. Gold-plated binding posts take the speaker cable, and the enclosure is wall-mount capable, with M6 x 1.0 threaded inserts spaced 67 mm apart that accept screws of up to 12 mm engagement. JBL suggests a stand height of about 609 mm, and the packaging is fully sustainable.

Pairing

The recommended amplifier range is 10 to 75 W RMS per channel. With its low nominal impedance and modest efficiency, the L52 wants an integrated amplifier or receiver rated for such loads, and a unit that can supply clean current will make better use of the upper part of that window. Because the port exits at the front and threaded wall inserts are provided, the pair suits shelf, desk or wall positions next to a streaming amplifier or a compact turntable system.

Alternatives

The JBL L82 Classic is the larger bookshelf model in the same Classic range, using an 8 inch Pure Pulp woofer, a 1 inch titanium dome tweeter crossed at 1.7 kHz and an 8 ohm, 88 dB rating.
