The HD3 Next Gen is the updated version of the compact HD3 powered desktop speaker pair from Audioengine, announced in 2025 at a recommended price of USD 359. The main change over the first generation is a 24-bit DAC in place of the earlier 16-bit converter, joined by a USB-C audio input and a newer Bluetooth 5.3 module, while the cabinet dimensions stay the same as before.

Key specs that matter

Audioengine fits a 2.75-inch aramid fibre midrange/woofer and a 0.75-inch silk dome tweeter in each box. A Class AB analogue amplifier supplies 15 W RMS per channel into 4 ohm, with a peak rating of 30 W per channel and 60 W in total under the AES method. Rated response runs from 65 Hz to 22 kHz. The digital section accepts up to 48 kHz and upsamples to 24 bit. The Bluetooth receiver handles aptX HD along with plain aptX, AAC and SBC, and it uses an external antenna for extended wireless range. Every speaker measures 17.8 cm high, 10.8 cm wide and 14.0 cm deep.

Engineering and use context

The pair is sold as one powered left speaker holding the electronics and one passive right speaker linked with the supplied banana-plug cable. Wired sources connect through USB-C, a 3.5 mm mini-jack and stereo RCA inputs. A front headphone output uses an OPA2134 op-amp and delivers 380 mW into 32 ohm. A bass reduction toggle switch helps when the speakers sit close to a wall, and an auto power-save mode drops the system into idle when no signal arrives. The hand-built wooden cabinets come in Matte Black, real Walnut veneer or Hi-Gloss Piano White, with removable magnetic grilles. A switching power supply with a detachable cord handles mains voltage conversion automatically. The box also includes the antenna, a USB-C cable, a mini-jack cable and microfibre bags, and Audioengine covers the system with a 3-year warranty.

Pairing

A computer or laptop can feed the pair directly over USB-C with no separate converter, while mobile devices can connect wirelessly without any adapter. The adjustable RCA line output can drive a subwoofer or forward the signal to another component, and Audioengine sells the system bundled with its S6 powered subwoofer. When the system runs from an inverter, Audioengine asks for 50 to 60 W of capacity. Its compact size fits a desktop or bookcase in a room of about 20 m2 or less.

Alternatives

The Audioengine A2+ offers the brand's more compact self-powered bookshelf format.
