Headphones — Yamaha YH-L500A

The YH-L500A is Yamaha's wireless home-theatre headphone, a closed-back over-ear model designed first for films, series and music videos rather than commuting. It inherits the core idea of the more expensive YH-L700A, Yamaha's proprietary Sound Field processing, but drops head tracking and noise cancelling to reach a much lower price, while adding multipoint pairing and a noticeably lighter build. It launched in April 2025.

Key specs that matter

A 40mm dynamic driver is fitted in each cup, rated for a response of 20Hz to 20,000Hz. Bluetooth 5.4 supports SBC, AAC, LC3 and Qualcomm aptX Adaptive, with a working range of about 10m. A full charge gives up to 20 hours of playback, and a 3.5mm cable is supplied for wired listening. Weight is 265g, and the earcups swivel but do not fold.

Engineering and use context

The Sound Field system is the model's defining feature. Two built-in modes, CINEMA and MUSIC, are selected with a single button and process an ordinary stereo signal into a multi-channel style presentation, placing effects and ambience around and in front of the listener rather than inside the head. Because the processing runs inside the headphone, it works regardless of the source format or playback device, unlike spatial audio systems that depend on specially encoded content or a particular phone platform. A dedicated gaming mode reduces the delay between picture and sound for games and video. Multipoint keeps the headphone connected to two devices at once, such as a tablet and a phone, and Google Fast Pair speeds up setup on Android. The headband and earpads were reshaped for comfort over feature-length viewing. There is no active noise cancellation or ambient mode, which fits its role as an at-home headphone.

Pairing

The YH-L500A connects directly to televisions, tablets, laptops and phones over Bluetooth, and a source with aptX Adaptive keeps latency low enough for lip-sync to stay natural. LC3 support prepares it for newer LE Audio devices. The supplied cable covers sources without Bluetooth, such as an AV receiver's headphone output or an older hi-fi system, while firmware updates arrive through Yamaha's free companion app.
