Headphones — Yamaha YH-C3000

Yamaha's YH-C3000 pairs a newly developed Armodynamic driver with closed-back beech wood housings, the same timber Yamaha uses in its grand pianos. It is hand-assembled at the company's Kakegawa factory in Japan, where Yamaha builds its grand pianos and audio components, and sits in the Yamaha lineup alongside the open-back YH-4000 and YH-5000SE.

The Armodynamic driver is a dynamic design. Yamaha quotes a frequency response of 5 Hz to 55 kHz, sensitivity of 94 dB/mW at 1 kHz and impedance of 34 ohm at 1 kHz. The headphone weighs 330 g. It ships with an unbalanced silver-coated OFC cable terminated in a 3.5 mm plug with a screw-on 6.3 mm adaptor, and a headphone carrying case plus a cloth for cleaning are included. Ear pads are covered in leather, which Yamaha describes as having balanced density and openness.

Engineering and use context

The driver name comes from the Italian word armonia, meaning harmony, and Yamaha says the unit took over a decade to develop specifically for this model. Its diaphragm is molded as a three-layer structure of composite materials such as paper and resin, and includes ZYLON, the same fibre Yamaha uses in the diaphragms of its hi-fi loudspeakers. The goal stated by the maker is a balance of light weight, rigidity and internal loss. Behind the diaphragm, rear ventilation and a patented Y-shaped reinforced mesh damper are intended to reduce distortion while keeping low-frequency level, and a pure iron pole piece supports the motor's driving force. The beech housings are sanded, painted and polished in multiple layers over an extended period, giving a black mirrored finish through which light still passes so the natural grain remains visible underneath. Yamaha notes that beech is light and highly rigid, and that shaping each piece into a housing calls for experienced craftsmen across wood procurement, processing, painting and polishing. Assembly is carried out under strict quality control by staff with expertise in both instruments and audio. A two-layer headband with a smooth stepless slider sets the fit.

Pairing

With its moderate impedance and single-ended cable, the YH-C3000 connects to portable players as well as to desktop headphone amplifiers such as Yamaha's own HA-L7A, which the company lists in the same headphone section. No balanced cable is included, unlike with the YH-5000SE.
