The TW-ES5A is Yamaha's true wireless sports earbud, launched alongside the TW-E5B and TW-E7B as part of a trio built around the brand's True Sound tuning philosophy. Unlike its lifestyle-oriented siblings, it is engineered first for training and running, with a compact housing, silicone stabilising fins and full waterproofing. It is sold in several colours, including black, white and pink, and ships with a short USB-A to USB-C charging cable.

Key specs that matter

A 6mm dynamic driver in each bud covers 20Hz to 20kHz. Bluetooth 5.2 supports SBC, AAC and Qualcomm aptX Adaptive. The earbuds run for around 9 hours per charge, with the case adding a further 25 hours for a total of up to 34 hours, and a 10-minute top-up gives roughly an hour of playback. A full charge takes about 1.5 hours for the earbuds and about 2.5 hours for the case. Talk time reaches up to 5 hours, the housing is rated IPX7, and each earpiece weighs 7.9g.

Engineering and use context

The design priorities are fit, stability and durability under movement. The earbud shell is shaped to sit securely in the ear, and four sizes of ear tips combine with four sizes of silicone fins so the fit can be locked in for running, cycling or gym work. The IPX7 rating means the earbuds withstand temporary immersion, so sweat, rain and rinsing under a tap are not a concern. Qualcomm TrueWireless Mirroring keeps the connection between both earpieces and the source stable when the phone is in a pocket or armband, a common weak point of sports earbuds, since each earbud receives the signal directly rather than relaying it through its partner. For calls, a dedicated microphone conduit works with Qualcomm cVc processing to suppress wind noise and echo. There is no active noise cancellation, a deliberate choice for outdoor training, and an Ambient Sound mode lets outside noise through when awareness of traffic or a coach matters.

Pairing

As a true wireless earbud, the TW-ES5A connects to any Bluetooth phone, tablet or computer, and phones supporting Qualcomm's aptX Adaptive hold the most stable link when the phone is carried on the body. Siri and Google Assistant are both supported, and the free Yamaha Headphone Control app provides firmware updates and battery status.
