The Mu7 is an over-ear Bluetooth headphone from KEF with closed-back earcups and Smart Active Noise Cancellation, designed in collaboration with the industrial designer Ross Lovegrove. It went on sale in October 2022 at GBP 349, USD 399.99 and EUR 399, and is offered in Charcoal Grey and Silver Grey. In continental Europe pre-orders opened on 2 November 2022, and the model supports hi-res audio playback.

Key specs that matter

A 40 mm full-range dynamic driver developed by KEF sits in each earcup, with a stated response of 20 Hz to 20 kHz. The wireless link runs on Bluetooth 5.1, Class 2, in the 2.402 to 2.48 GHz band with a range of 10 m. A Qualcomm chip handles SBC, AAC, aptX and aptX HD, the last carrying audio at up to 24 bit and 48 kHz. Output is rated at 15 mW. The battery gives up to 40 hours of play with Bluetooth and ANC both on, and a 15-minute charge adds 8 hours; charging input is DC 5 V at 900 mA over USB-C. The headphone weighs 309 g, measures 199 x 153 x 89 mm and is rated to work between -10 and 45 degrees Celsius.

Engineering and use context

The frame is aluminium, with a particularly thin headband and thick memory foam ear pads covered in leatherette. The earcups turn through 90 degrees, letting the headphone fold flat in its hard carrying case. Noise cancelling uses several microphones and an algorithm that targets specific frequencies, while Qualcomm cVc processing is applied to the microphone signal for calls. Playback, track selection, call handling, voice assistant and volume are all operated from a capacitive touch surface on the right earcup, so there is no row of physical buttons. A 3.5 mm input allows passive wired listening when the battery is flat. Supplied accessories are a USB-C cable, a 3.5 mm audio cord, a flight adapter, the carrying case and a quick start guide. The Mu7 joined the Mu3 earphones in the KEF wireless personal audio range, alongside the Muo portable speakers.

Pairing

Sources can be Android or iOS phones and tablets as well as computers with Bluetooth; a device with aptX HD output makes use of the aptX HD path, while others fall back to AAC or SBC. On a flight the supplied adapter and audio cord connect the headphone to a seat socket, and the same cord works with a portable music player or a jack on a home hi-fi amplifier.

Alternatives

The KEF Mu3 is the other model in the brand's wireless headphone range, built as a set of earphones rather than an over-ear design.
