Wilson Benesch is a loudspeaker and turntable maker from Sheffield, England, founded in 1989 and best known for building speaker cabinets, tonearms and turntable parts from carbon fibre composites. It is a privately held firm that works out of Falcon House, an art-deco building in the north-west of the city that was once the home of Batchelors, and it produces most of what it sells under its own roof rather than buying in finished parts.

Range & what it's known for

The reference loudspeakers sit in the Geometry Series, which combines metal alloys with carbon fibre composites and runs through models such as Vertex, Vector, Fulcrum, Discovery II, A.C.T. One Evolution, Endeavour and Cardinal. Square Series II is the wood-based family with rectilinear cabinets, aimed at buyers who want the company's drivers in a more conventional enclosure. The Analogue Collection covers turntables and tonearms, and a furniture line includes the R1 Hi-Fi Rack. Rather than relying on outside driver suppliers, the firm designs its own drive units, named Tactic, Tactic II and Wide Bandwidth One, and it has worked with the universities of Leeds, Oxford and Sheffield on research into advanced materials.

Who owns it and where it's made

Wilson Benesch is co-owned by Craig Milnes, the Design Director, and Christina Milnes, the Managing Director. Design, engineering and manufacture all happen in Sheffield. Around 90 percent of the components are made in-house from raw materials, using CNC machining and Vacuum Resin Transfer Moulding equipment to form the composite parts, which is unusual for a speaker company of this size.

The lineup in this catalog

Loudspeakers, turntables and electronics are listed here. The smallest models cost roughly GBP 5,000, and the largest complete systems go well past GBP 300,000.

Who it's for

Wilson Benesch makes sense for people who want a speaker or record player whose structure is made from composite materials produced by the same factory that designs it. Square Series II is where most owners begin in a smaller room or a buyer who prefers a wooden box, while the Geometry Series offers a step-by-step upgrade path from stand-mount to large floorstanding models. Vinyl owners can stay inside one maker by adding a turntable and tonearm from the Analogue Collection and a matching R1 rack.
