Studer is a Swiss professional audio brand founded in 1948 in Zurich by Willi Studer. It built oscilloscopes at first and turned to audio in 1949, going on to make multitrack tape recorders that became standard equipment in major studios and, from the 1990s, digital broadcast mixing consoles. Its consumer products were split off under the Revox name in 1951, leaving Studer focused on studio and broadcast work.

Range & what it's known for

The tape machines made the name. The J37 of 1964 was the first four-track model and was used by the Beatles at Abbey Road. It was followed by the A80, A800, A820 and A827, offered in 8, 16 and 24-track versions and widely installed in professional studios. In the mid-1990s Studer moved into digital mixing, launching the OnAir 2000 broadcast console in 1997 and the Vista series in 2003. Vista desks introduced a knobs-on-glass control surface, where physical controls sit around touch screens, and the Vista 1, V and X remain in production today.

Who owns it and where it's made

Harman International bought Studer in 1994 and in 2006 moved its operations from Switzerland to Pécs in Hungary to cut costs. In February 2021 the Canadian broadcast technology company Evertz Microsystems acquired the brand from Harman. Evertz now builds the Vista consoles at its facilities in Burlington, Ontario, and continues to develop new Studer products.

Who it's for

For hi-fi listeners, Studer mostly means the classic open-reel recorders, sought by collectors and analogue studios that want a professional transport for mastering, archiving or playing tapes. Compact two-track models make a sensible starting point, while the 16 and 24-track A800 and A820 are machines for full studios with the space and budget for servicing. Broadcasters and live sound engineers meet the brand today through the Vista consoles.
