Est. year: 2017

Orchard Audio is a US company producing amplifiers and digital source components, which was founded in 2017 by electrical engineer Leonid (Leo) Ayzenshtat. The company is known for compact power amplifiers whose output stages use gallium nitride (GaN) transistors, and for a design approach built around objective measurements rather than deliberate voicing. Products, from complete amplifiers to bare amplifier modules for builders, are handcrafted in small numbers and sold largely direct, which keeps it a boutique operation.

Range & what it's known for

Most of the catalogue revolves around Starkrimson. The Starkrimson 25 line covers 150-watt mono and stereo models, while the Starkrimson Ultra line moves up to 500 watts, again in mono and stereo forms. The Starkrimson Mono Ultra Premium carried an MSRP of USD 2,499.95. In these class D designs the GaN transistors switch at roughly 800 kHz, two to three times faster than typical silicon class D output devices. Next to the speaker amplifiers sit home theater amplifiers, the Valencia MG headphone amplifier and the PecanPi+ streamer and DAC built around the AK4499EX converter chip, plus DIY modules and speaker cables.

Who owns it and where it's made

Orchard Audio is run by its founder, who previously worked with NASA, Lockheed Martin, L3 Technologies and Siemens and consulted for several audio brands. Design and assembly take place in-house in the United States, and the company has used Kickstarter to fund projects such as the BOSC monoblock.

The lineup in this catalog

The catalog lists the Starkrimson 25 Mono Premium at 150W into 8 ohms, the Starkrimson Stereo Ultra 2.5 at 250W into 8 ohms and 500W into 4 ohms, and the Valencia headphone amplifier with over 15W into 32 ohms.

Who it's for

Orchard Audio fits buyers chasing high output from compact, efficient chassis and who value measured performance. A sensible entry is a Starkrimson 25 model or the Valencia MG for headphones, with the Ultra line as the step up for low-sensitivity speakers, and the PecanPi+ as a matching source.
