Neumann, formally Georg Neumann GmbH, is a German maker of professional audio equipment founded in Berlin in 1928 by Georg Neumann and Erich Rickmann. The name is tied above all to condenser microphones such as the U 47 and U 87, and today the company also builds the KH Line of studio monitors and subwoofers, headphones such as the NDH 20, preamplifiers and audio interfaces. Berlin is still the official headquarters, and since March 2024 the company has been led by CEO Yasmine Riechers.

Range & what it's known for

Microphones remain the historic core of the catalogue. The U 47 became one of the defining recording microphones of its era and was used on sessions from Bing Crosby to The Beatles, marking a move towards a clearer, more present vocal sound on record. The loudspeaker side is newer. Neumann introduced its KH Line of active monitors in 2010, building on the work of Klein + Hummel, a monitor specialist from Stuttgart founded in 1945. The current line runs from the compact KH 80 to the larger KH 420, with matching KH subwoofers for extended bass. One defining trait of the system is MA 1 Automatic Monitor Alignment, which tunes the speakers to the room and works in stereo, surround and 3D audio setups.

Who owns it and where it's made

Sennheiser Electronic GmbH acquired Neumann in 1991, and the brand has operated within the Sennheiser group ever since. After the takeover, production moved to a purpose-built cleanroom facility in Wedemark near Hanover, the home of Sennheiser, while the registered head office stayed in Berlin. Klein + Hummel came into the same group through a separate Sennheiser acquisition, and its monitor know-how was folded into the Neumann name when the KH Line launched.

The lineup in this catalog

Here Neumann is represented by active studio monitors and subwoofers from the KH Line. A single compact nearfield costs around EUR 1,000, while the larger main monitors and low-frequency units go past EUR 10,000.

Who it's for

The KH Line suits recording engineers, producers and project studios looking for calibrated nearfield or midfield monitoring from a company with a long history in studio equipment. In a compact space the KH 80 is the natural first step, add a KH subwoofer later and run MA 1 alignment to match the system to the space. Larger control rooms and 3D audio rooms can move up to the KH 420 and multi-channel setups built from the same family, keeping one alignment workflow across every speaker.
