McIntosh Laboratory is an American maker of amplifiers and audio electronics, founded in 1949 by Frank H. McIntosh and Gordon Gow in Silver Spring, Maryland, and based in Binghamton, New York, since 1951. It is known for black glass front panels and blue watt meters, and its catalogue reaches from tube and solid-state amplifiers to preamplifiers, turntables, CD players, headphone amplifiers and subwoofers.

Range & what it's known for

Core products are the MC power amplifiers, the C preamplifiers and the MA integrated amplifiers. Tube designs include the long-running MC275 stereo amplifier and the C2700 preamplifier, solid-state models include the MC462 rated at 450 W per channel, and integrated amplifiers run up to the MA8000 and MA12000. Two circuits define the engineering. The Unity Coupled Circuit, patented at the company's start, still underpins its tube amplifiers. In the solid-state power amplifiers, a dedicated Autoformer output transformer on each channel lets the amplifier deliver its full rated power into speaker loads of different impedance. The MT10 turntable extends the range into analogue sources.

Who owns it and where it's made

Ownership has changed several times. Clarion bought McIntosh in 1990, D&M Holdings in 2003 and Milan-based Fine Sounds in 2012. A management buyout in 2014 renamed that group McIntosh Group, with Sonus Faber as a sister brand. Highlander Partners of Dallas acquired it in 2022, and Bose Corporation bought McIntosh Group in November 2024. Manufacturing continues at the long-time headquarters in Binghamton.

The lineup in this catalog

McIntosh amplifiers and preamplifiers listed here start near USD 5,000 and climb past USD 50,000 for the biggest separates.

Who it's for

McIntosh fits buyers wanting an entire system from one American maker with a consistent look across every box. An MA integrated amplifier is the usual way in, while the next step is a C preamplifier paired with an MC power amplifier, choosing tubes or solid state. Owners of demanding or low-impedance loudspeakers often pick the Autoformer models, and the turntable and source components let a system stay within the brand.
