Marantz is an audio and home cinema electronics brand that began in 1953 in Queens, New York, after Saul Marantz built his first product, the Consolette preamplifier, at home in Kew Gardens in 1952. Today it is run from Carlsbad, California and Osaka, Japan, and produces stereo amplifiers, network players, disc players and AV receivers sold worldwide. Its most successful period came in the mid and late 1970s.
Range & what it's known for
The current stereo range is built around numbered models. The MODEL 10 is the reference integrated amplifier, with the LINK 10n as its streaming preamplifier partner. Below it sit the MODEL 30 and MODEL 50 integrated amplifiers, the MODEL 40n with network streaming and the MODEL 60n as a 60 W streaming amplifier. The compact MODEL M1 is a 100 W per channel streaming amplifier, while the PM6007 remains the entry integrated. For home cinema there are the CINEMA 50, 60 and 70s receivers, the STEREO 70s, the eight-channel MODEL M4 and separate AV processors and power amplifiers. For decades the voicing of the brand was guided by Ken Ishiwata, who worked with Marantz for about forty years until his death in 2019.
Who owns it and where it's made
Ownership has changed many times. Superscope bought the company in 1964, Philips acquired it outside North America in 1980, and Marantz Japan took over the brand in 2001. A merger with Denon in 2002 formed D&M Holdings, which Sound United acquired in 2017. Masimo bought Sound United in 2022, and in 2025 Harman International, part of Samsung, purchased Marantz together with Denon, Bowers & Wilkins and Polk.
The lineup in this catalog
Marantz is listed here with AV receivers, stereo amplifiers and disc players, costing from roughly USD 500 for an entry receiver up to several thousand dollars for the flagship separates.
Who it's for
A household running both a stereo system and a home cinema can source both from Marantz. A simple path starts with the PM6007 or the MODEL M1, moves to the MODEL 40n or MODEL 30, and ends with the MODEL 10 and LINK 10n. On the cinema side the CINEMA 70s is the slim entry and the AV separates the upper end.
