Est. year: 2009

Hidizs is a Chinese maker of portable audio gear founded in 2009 by a group of technicians with hi-fi research and development backgrounds. It builds pocket music players, USB DAC and amplifier dongles and in-ear monitors, all aimed at affordable portable listening. The first product to carry its name was the AP100 player, and the company now employs more than 40 audio research and development staff.

Range & what it's known for

The player family centres on the AP80 in its many versions, from the original and the stainless steel edition to the AP80 PRO, AP80 PRO-X and the AP80 PRO MAX in Hidizs and titanium editions, joined by the palm-sized AP30 Music Boy. The DAC and amplifier side includes the S3 Pro, S8, S8 Pro Robin, S9 Pro, S9 Pro Plus, the XO and the SD2, plus the earlier H2 and DH80 units. In-ear monitors form a large third pillar, with the Mermaid MS1, MS2, MS3, MS5 and MD4 models, the MK10 and MK12, the ST2 PRO with its own USB-C DAC cable, and planar designs such as the MP143 Salt, MP145 and the MP145 PRO with a 14.5 mm planar driver. Several launches, the AP30 among them, started as crowdfunding campaigns.

Who owns it and where it's made

Hidizs is an independent Chinese company. The founders spent 2010 studying the global hi-fi market and settled the core team in 2012, two years before the AP100 reached buyers. Product design and engineering are done by the in-house team in China, and the devices are produced there as well. International sales run through the company's own online store and a network of regional distributors in Europe and Japan.

The lineup in this catalog

Here the brand is represented by its pocket players, DAC dongles and earphones, priced from about USD 50 to around USD 500.

Who it's for

Hidizs suits listeners on a modest budget who want better portable sound than a phone alone delivers. The easiest first step is a dongle such as the S3 Pro or XO, or an entry earphone from the Mermaid family. Buyers who prefer a separate player can move to the AP80 PRO MAX, and those after planar in-ear monitors can step up to the MP145 or MP145 PRO. Matching cables and balanced adapters from the same maker complete a small portable system.
