Genelec is a Finnish maker of active loudspeakers, founded on 17 February 1978 in Helsinki and now based in Iisalmi. Its main business is powered studio monitors used in recording, broadcast and post-production, and it also builds home and AV installation speakers. With around 210 employees in 2022 and about 90 percent of output exported, it is one of the larger independent specialists in self-powered speakers.

Range & what it's known for

The catalogue is organised into studio monitors, home speakers and installation models. Studio work centres on the compact 8000 series two-ways, the 8300 and 8200 Smart Active Monitor lines and the 1000 series main monitors, with matching subwoofers. The 4000 series serves installation projects, while the G and F series take the same active approach into living rooms. A defining design choice is the die-cast aluminium enclosure, which replaced conventional MDF boxes in many models. The SAM models add internal DSP that is set up through GLM software, including AutoCal automatic calibration with a measurement microphone.

Who owns it and where it's made

Genelec was co-founded by Ilpo Martikainen and Topi Partanen, and it began in a 190 square metre basement on Satamakatu. It remains an independent Finnish company led by CEO Siamak Naghian. Design and production take place at the Luuniemi site near Lake Porovesi in Iisalmi. In 2022 the company reported revenue of EUR 51.9 million and an operating income of EUR 12.3 million.

The lineup in this catalog

Active studio monitors, with several models across categories. A compact near-field monitor costs about EUR 500, while the largest monitoring systems go well past EUR 10,000.

Who it's for

Genelec works for engineers, producers and home listeners looking for an amplified speaker with no separate power amplifier to match. Most buyers start with a small 8000 series pair or a G series model. The upgrade path leads to SAM monitors with GLM calibration, added subwoofers and the 1000 series main monitors for larger control rooms. Choose it when a single integrated, measured and adjustable package matters more than mixing and matching separate components.
