Fostex is a Japanese audio brand launched in June 1973 by a Tokyo-based component maker established in 1948, which still owns it. It is known for loudspeaker drive units, semi-open and closed headphones, studio monitors and microphones, and in earlier decades for affordable multitrack recorders that brought home and project studio recording within reach of musicians.
Range & what it's known for
The headphone line is built around the RP family - the T50RPmk4Q, the T60RPmk2 variants and the Bluetooth T50RP-BT - alongside the TH1100RPmk2 at a higher tier. Drive units remain a large part of the catalog, led by the FE series of full-range speakers such as the FE108NS and the FE168NS, the latter using a two-layer paper cone and an external ferrite magnet. Speaker systems, DACs and headphone amplifiers complete the current Japanese range. Back in 1995 the company also released what it describes as the first portable affordable digital recorder, after a decade of analog multitrack tape machines.
Who owns it and where it's made
The parent company trades on the Tokyo Stock Exchange under code 6794 and is headquartered in Akishima, Tokyo, led by president Hirozo Yoshizawa. Much of the parent firm's business is OEM work, supplying speakers and audio components to large consumer electronics and car makers, while Fostex is the name it uses for products sold under its own badge. Design and engineering are handled by the group in Japan.
The lineup in this catalog
Drive units, headphones and professional equipment across several categories. Prices start near USD 100 for entry headphones and go beyond USD 1,000 for upper studio and consumer models.
Who it's for
Fostex suits DIY speaker builders who want a single full-range driver in a cabinet of their own design, with the FE line offering sizes from small desktop boxes to larger floor builds. Headphone buyers can begin with a T50RP or T60RP model and step up to the TH1100RPmk2. Studio users find monitors and microphones from a maker with a long recording background.
