Focal is a French maker of loudspeakers and headphones, founded in 1979 by engineer and technology journalist Jacques Mahul as a small acoustics research office. Today it covers home hi-fi, car audio, studio monitors, custom installation speakers and headphones, all run from its base in Saint-Etienne, where the company keeps control over nearly every stage of production, from drivers to finished cabinets.

Range & what it's known for

The home speaker catalog climbs through four families - Chora at the entry point, then Aria, Sopra and the Utopia range at the top. Headphones arrived in 2012 and now run from wireless Bathys models to open-back Elear-derived designs and the Utopia headphone. Focal's identity rests on driver work done in-house. The inverted dome tweeter dates from 1981, the W sandwich cone from 1995 and the pure beryllium tweeter from 2002. Later additions include a flax membrane cone in 2013 and a tuned mass damper for tweeter mounting in 2015, both used across mid-range and upper series.

Who owns it and where it's made

In 2011 Focal merged with British electronics maker Naim Audio, forming the Vervent Audio Group, which still holds both names. A management buyout backed by Naxicap Partners followed in 2014, and Alpha Private Equity took a majority stake in 2019. In 2026 Belgian technology group Barco announced it would acquire Vervent for roughly EUR 135 million. Design and the main factory remain in Saint-Etienne, with a separate cabinet-making plant at Bourbon-Lancy in Burgundy.

The lineup in this catalog

Loudspeakers and headphones, spread across several categories. The entry price is close to EUR 300 for compact Chora bookshelf speakers and climb to around EUR 200,000 for the largest Utopia system.

Who it's for

Focal lets one maker cover a whole system path, starting with a Chora pair, moving to Aria or Sopra as budget grows and ending at Utopia. Buyers who value drivers built by the speaker maker itself, rather than bought from suppliers, have a clear reason to choose it. The headphone side gives the same choice for personal listening, from portable wireless models to open-back designs meant for a dedicated amplifier at home.
