Tonearms — J.Sikora KV9 TONEARM

The KV9 is the entry point to the tonearm range of J.Sikora, the Polish firm set up in Lublin in 2007 by Janusz Sikora, who designed this arm himself. It takes the oil-damped unipivot principle and the aramid armtube of the larger KV models and packages them at the common 9 inch length, with a lower price as the goal. In autumn 2024 the arm cost EUR 4,200 without a VTA tower, and European price lists run up to about EUR 5,745 depending on finish and the VTA option.

Key specs that matter

Effective length measures 228.6 mm, with 212 mm between pivot and spindle. The maker quotes an effective mass of 11.2 g and a total arm mass of only 160 g. A single pivot point in an oil bath carries the arm. The tube is a conical Kevlar part, and the rest of the structure uses aluminium, bronze, brass and stainless steel. Adjustment for both azimuth and VTA is provided, and signal travels on 24K gold-plated 6N OCC copper. Standard colours are natural yellow and lacquered black matte, and some European price lists add white.

Engineering and use context

Kevlar, chemically polyparaphenylene terephthalamide, gives a tube that is stiff for its weight, and here it has a smaller diameter than the wide conical tube of the first KV12. The pivot on this model is steel rather than the zirconia ceramic used in the MAX versions, one of the steps J.Sikora took to reduce cost, and many housing parts are aluminium finished in black where the MAX arms use bronze and brass. The damping fluid around the pivot controls the movement of the arm, which would otherwise be free to tilt on its single point. Wiring comes from Soyaton and runs as one unbroken length from the cartridge clips to the output plugs, available with RCA or XLR termination. Several counterweights of different sizes are packed with the arm, and turning a screw in the counterweight sets azimuth. In the basic version, arm height is set by loosening a single screw in the column, while the optional on-the-fly VTA tower allows changes during play. Anti-skating is applied by a small weight supplied with the arm.

Pairing

Its effective mass falls in the middle of the effective mass scale, which points to cartridges of medium compliance, and the choice of counterweights covers a spread of cartridge weights. Any deck with an armboard cut for this geometry can take it, and the XLR cable option lets it feed a balanced phono stage directly.

Alternatives

The J.Sikora KV9 MAX shares the same geometry but adds a zirconia pivot, a thinner Kevlar tube and bronze metalwork at a lower 10.7 g effective mass.
