The DAC has a built-in streamer and can work both over the UPnP network and via the USB port. The digital connection of the streamer to the converter section inside the device is made via the i2S bus. The Bryston BDA-3.14 also has a digital volume control module on board, so you can dispense with a preamp if you wish.
