Eight watts per channel is not a typo - the S.A.Lab Luthier Series integrated amplifier in this build outputs just 2x8W into 8 ohms from its push-pull pairs of 6F6 output tubes and it drives the Davis Acoustics MV ONE MASTER without strain. The speaker is the reason why, a single-driver floorstander built around Davis's proprietary 20DE8 full-range unit with no crossover at all, joined here by the S.A.Lab p245 EX tube phonostage and a Michell Orbe SE turntable for a system built specifically around vinyl.

The system at a glance

Four components, a low-power all-tube amplification chain, and a system built around one core idea - a properly matched high-sensitivity speaker needs far less power than conventional wisdom suggests. This suits a listener who wants the specific tonal character single-ended-style low-power tube amplification delivers, built around a speaker engineered from the ground up to make that approach work rather than merely tolerate it.

Why these components work together

The MV ONE MASTER is rated at 93.5 dB sensitivity into a nominal 8 ohms, driven entirely by a single 222mm 20DE8 driver using an Alnico magnet system and a 7kg motor assembly, with no crossover network dividing the signal between multiple drivers at any point. Davis Acoustics markets the speaker as compatible with amplifiers "including those with very low power (including tube amplifiers)," and the Luthier Series is close to as low-power as serious tube amplification gets - 8 watts per channel into 8 ohms, doubling to 16 watts into 4 ohms, from a push-pull pair of 6F6 tubes per channel with 6SL7 drivers and a 5U4G rectifier. At the MV ONE MASTER's sensitivity, that modest wattage translates into usable volume, since every 3dB of sensitivity roughly halves the power needed for a given loudness, and 93.5dB sits well above the 86 to 89dB that most conventional multi-way speakers offer. The speaker's three switchable connection modes, Direct for maximum dynamics straight into the driver, PROXI for smaller or more reverberant rooms, and FT for a livelier bass-and-treble emphasis, give the low-power amplifier further scope to be tuned to the room instead of fighting it. The S.A.Lab p245 EX phonostage, built with an oversized power supply for a cleaner tube-based signal path, and the Michell Orbe SE turntable, using the same inverted-bearing philosophy as Michell's GyroDec but in a heavier, non-suspended chassis, complete a system where every component is chosen to support the same underlying philosophy of low-power, high-sensitivity, crossover-free simplicity.

How it sounds

Hifiverse's own description calls the result "very pleasant and rich," and that tracks with what a crossover-free full-range driver typically delivers - exceptional tonal coherence and timing, since there's no crossover point where two drivers hand off a frequency band and potentially introduce phase discontinuity. The trade-off single-driver designs usually carry, some compromise in outright bass extension or ultimate dynamic scale compared with a multi-way tower, is offset here by the driver's large 7kg motor and high sensitivity, giving the Luthier Series's modest 8 watts a speaker that can actually use them properly rather than merely survive them.

    Orbe SE

    от Michell Engineering

When developing Michell Orbe SE, the goal was to achieve the sound quality of the company’s senior turntable, Michell Orbe, but in a smaller package (150x490x375 mm). This is how the Spider Edition solution appeared – devoid of a large base and a dust cover (you have to buy it separately). Michell Orbe SE uses a system with two layers of isolation and a 60mm thick vibration damping Polymer platter. The drive system is belt, supports speeds of 33 1/3, 45 revolutions, high performance DC motor with dedicated “Never-Connected circut” power supply is used. The turntable weighs 13.5 kg. The turntable looks increbidly.
