With the TT-S303, Yamaha came back to making record players - a manual belt-driven deck released in 2018 in a piano black finish with a built-in phono equalizer. It comes ready to play with a straight tonearm and a factory-mounted moving-magnet cartridge.

Key specs that matter

A DC motor turns the 30 cm aluminium die-cast platter by belt at 33 1/3 and 45 rpm, with a rotation speed variation of plus or minus 2% and wow and flutter of 0.2%. Signal to noise ratio is 67 dB or higher, A-weighted. With the internal RIAA stage switched in, output is 140 mV, while the direct phono output delivers 2.5 mV. Its straight arm is of the static balance kind, measuring 223.5 mm effective with 19 mm of overhang, and it takes cartridges from 15.5 g to 19 g including the headshell, and offers stylus pressure adjustment from 0 g to 4 g. The supplied cartridge weighs 5.0 g, stands 17.0 mm tall, tracks at 3.5 g and sits in a 10 g headshell. Dimensions are 450 x 136 x 368 mm and weight is 4.8 kg.

Engineering and use context

Yamaha chose belt drive and a high-inertia platter to keep rotation stable while isolating motor vibration from the record. The high-density MDF cabinet is rigid and built with large internal loss to damp unwanted resonance, and the power supply sits outside the chassis as an external DC adapter so that electrical interference stays away from the signal path. A static balance arm relies on its counterweight to set tracking force, which Yamaha links to accurate stylus pressure, and the straight arm shape was picked for stable tracking. A detachable headshell makes it simple to fit an alternative MM cartridge. Power consumption is 1.5 W in use and 0.1 W in standby, and a single pair of RCA sockets carries the output.

Pairing

A switch selects between phono and line output. Set to line, the deck can feed a plain amplifier input that has no phono stage, or even a pair of active speakers, and set to phono, it leaves equalization to the MM input of the amplifier. Yamaha lists its R-N600A and R-N800A network receivers as matching components and suggests a MusicCast stereo receiver when streaming should share the same system.

Alternatives

The Yamaha MusicCast VINYL 500 is the other turntable offered next to the TT-S303, adding network streaming to vinyl playback.
