The Yamaha GT-5000 is a belt-drive turntable that draws on the company's original GT series, short for Gigantic and Tremendous, whose heavy wooden cabinets and platters were used to damp vibration. Finished in black gloss in the style of a Yamaha grand piano, it is designed to match the C-5000 preamplifier, M-5000 power amplifier and NS-5000 speakers.

Key specs that matter

Speeds are 33 1/3 and 45 rpm, with a speed variation of plus or minus 0.1% and wow and flutter below 0.04%. A built-in crystal oscillator allows fine adjustment of plus or minus 1.5% in 0.1% steps. The two-part platter has a machined aluminium outer section of 35 cm diameter and a brass inner section of 14.3 cm, and the aluminium platter alone weighs 5 kg. Its straight arm uses static balance, with 223 mm effective length and minus 17 mm overhang, taking cartridge and headshell weights of 13.5 to 36 g, with a sub weight needed from 25 g. The supplied headshell weighs 14 g. Output terminals comprise a balanced XLR set and an unbalanced RCA set, plus a 3.5 mm strobe jack. Power consumption is 15 W, and the deck measures 546 x 221 x 411 mm and weighs 26.5 kg.

Engineering and use context

Driving the platter is a 24-pole, two-phase AC synchronous type driven by a crystal-generated sine wave. Yamaha's custom belt-drive mechanism is intended to reduce the influence of motor cogging and uses no feedback control, following the original GT idea of relying on platter mass rather than servo correction, and Yamaha credits the heavy platter with adding further stability to rotation. The short straight arm is built for rigidity and a balance of weight and mechanics aimed at better tracking, and its simple construction means no inside force canceller weight is needed. Yamaha describes the GT-5000 as referencing turntables from the golden age of Hi-Fi, and the straight, short arm is a core part of that approach. Specially designed heavy-duty feet were made for this model to add rigidity and stability.

Pairing

The balanced XLR output allows a fully balanced signal path from cartridge to speaker when the deck is connected to the C-5000 preamplifier and the M-5000 power amplifier. The RCA output serves conventional unbalanced phono inputs. A matching DCV-5000 is listed by Yamaha among the related products for this deck.

Alternatives

The Yamaha MusicCast VINYL 500 is a networked Yamaha turntable, also belt driven, using a DC motor and a 30 cm die-cast aluminium platter.
