The TN-5BB is a TEAC record player for manual use, driven by belt, with both XLR balanced and RCA phono outputs, supplied with an Ortofon 2M Red moving magnet cartridge mounted and aligned on its headshell. TEAC USA lists it at USD 2,199.99 in a black marble finish, with piano black MDF, pearl black synthetic marble and extruded aluminium knobs and feet.
Key specs that matter
Speed is controlled by the Platter Rotation Sensing Servo System (PRS3), in which an optical sensor under the platter reads its speed and adjusts the DC motor, which drives the rim through a flat belt at 33-1/3, 45 or 78 rpm. Wow and flutter is 0.1% or less. The 30 cm acrylic platter is 20 mm thick and weighs 1.7 kg. TEAC specifies the tonearm as static-balanced and S-shaped, 223 mm in effective length with 18 mm overhang, for cartridges of 4.0 to 13.0 g (14 to 23 g with the 10 g headshell). The 2M Red gives 5.5 mV at a tracking force of 1.8 g, with a stylus life of about 1000 hours. Dimensions are 450 x 148 x 351 mm with the lid closed, and weight is about 10.5 kg. With the lid open the deck needs 450 x 420 x 410 mm, and without it the height drops to 135 mm.
Engineering and use context
The 8.8 kg chassis stacks a 36 mm MDF base under a 12 mm synthetic marble top plate, separated by washi paper washers. Arm and platter sit on the marble while the motor is fixed to the MDF, isolating the arm from motor vibration. Because acrylic and vinyl sit close in the triboelectric series, records can lie on the platter without a mat. The knife-edge arm was developed with SAEC, using a stainless-steel knife edge for vertical movement and two Japanese precision ball bearings for lateral movement, with SAEC PC-Triple C internal wiring and Baerwald geometry. Arm height adjusts over about 6 mm for VTA. A powered lifter raises the arm with one button and lifts it by itself once a side has finished via a contactless optical sensor, a function that can be cancelled. Consumption is 2.0 W or less, 0.3 W in standby.
Pairing
No phono amplification is built in, so a separate phono equaliser is needed, and TEAC names its PE-505 as one that accepts the balanced XLR connection, which also supports MC cartridges. An RCA cable, ground wire, alignment gauge, 45 rpm adapter and four washers for adjusting foot height are supplied. The replacement stylus is the Ortofon 2M Red, and the speed selector is a rotary control of machined aluminium.
Alternatives
The TEAC TN-400BT-X costs less and pairs belt drive with a die-cast aluminium platter, a built-in phono stage and aptX Adaptive Bluetooth.
