The TH400 is the top model of the TH series from Thuono Audio, an Italian firm in Thiene, near Vicenza, that designs and hand-builds belt-driven turntables. Thuono describes it as the highest performing deck in the range, with a 400 mm platter and a rotation system scaled to match. The price is EUR 48,000 including VAT, with a Thuono tonearm included.
Key specs that matter
Both parts of the chassis combine a thick layer of aluminium with Nero Marquinia marble. At 775 mm wide, 510 mm deep and 360 mm tall, and it weighs 60 kg. The belt drive uses a damped flywheel of 160 mm diameter, and the two speeds are 33.33 and 45 rpm. Decoupling is handled by magnetic suspensions.
Engineering and use context
Thuono chose the oversized platter, frame and motor system to obtain a very high inertial torque, which keeps any slowing or rotational disturbance to a minimum. The aluminium platter is paired with a disc of damping, antistatic plastic. A polished pin with very low surface roughness fixes the platter, reducing friction noise and preventing wear of the self-lubricating bushings inside the platter support, and the spindle rides on a hardened steel ball with a contact point worked to reduce resonance. The whole bearing assembly was sized for the diameter of the platter. On the drive side, the DC motor rests in a flexible damping rubber mount, and motor and flywheel are fixed to a solid cylinder of the same marble, while an encoder tracks rotation and a Hall effect sensor read by a microprocessor keeps the speed exact. The three magnetic suspensions each pair two rings mounted in opposition, the upper one attached to a shaft sliding in a low-friction bushing that needs no lubrication or service, and they limit contact between the upper and lower chassis. Oversized support discs sit under the base. Thuono also applied resonance treatment to the rotation system, to the flywheel and to the lever that carries the tonearm.
Pairing
The supplied arm is a Thuono design, produced in 12, 10 and 9.5 inch lengths with ceramic bearings in both axes. The deck comes with the Thuono clamp, a screw-on bronze and aluminium weight with internal damping and an electromagnetic disc at the base that counters static charge on vinyl. The Magic Wood moving-coil cartridge, developed with Sublima Audio Research, and Thuono's own phono and power cables complete the maker's catalogue.
Alternatives
The Thuono TH350 uses a 350 mm platter, a 140 mm flywheel and weighs 45 kg in a 685 mm wide chassis.
