The TH350 sits between the TH300 and TH400 as the intermediate turntable of the TH series, made by hand by Thuono Audio in Thiene, Italy. Thuono presented the three decks together in 2023 after more than five years of study and prototype work, and each takes its number from its platter size. The TH350 is listed at EUR 34,000 with VAT, a price that covers a Thuono tonearm.
Key specs that matter
A 350 mm aluminium platter is driven by belt through a 140 mm flywheel, and speeds are 33.33 and 45 rpm. The chassis has two layers, Nero Marquinia marble and aluminium, and floats on magnetic suspensions. Thuono gives the size as 685 mm in width, 467 mm in depth and 334 mm in height, and the weight as 45 kg.
Engineering and use context
According to the maker, a platter of 350 mm is an unusual size for a turntable, and the extra diameter raises the inertial torque so that the platter resists slowing down or being disturbed in rotation. A second layer of damping, antistatic plastic sits on the aluminium. The platter is held by a sturdy polished pin running in lubricated bushings, which limits friction noise and wear, and the pin bears on a hardened steel sphere whose seat was designed to reduce resonance. The drive unit is fully separated from the chassis. Its DC motor is held in a flexible rubber support, the motor and the flywheel share a solid block of marble, and the flywheel both steadies the speed against small motor fluctuations and soaks up motor vibration. A rotation-speed encoder monitors the platter, and a microprocessor working with a Hall effect sensor holds speed constant. Three suspension units, each built from a pair of opposed magnetic rings with a maintenance-free self-lubricating bushing on the shaft, keep the upper chassis apart from the lower one, and oversized discs beneath add further decoupling. Resonance treatment was also applied to the platter bearing, the flywheel and the tonearm support lever.
Pairing
The included Thuono arm is offered in 12, 10 and 9.5 inch versions, each with DIN output and pure silver wiring. A screw-on Thuono clamp of bronze and aluminium is supplied too, with a damping layer inside and an electromagnetic disc on its underside to reduce static on records. For the rest of the chain Thuono offers its Magic Wood moving-coil cartridge, created with Sublima Audio Research, as well as a phono cable and a power cable.
Alternatives
The Thuono TH400 steps up to a 400 mm platter, a 160 mm flywheel and a total weight of 60 kg.
