The TD 1600 is a belt-drive turntable from Thorens with a sprung sub-chassis, reviving the layout of the brand's 1970s TD 160 series with a modern electronically controlled motor and balanced output wiring. It keeps a classical wooden plinth and is supplied with an acrylic dust cover and the 9-inch Thorens TP 92 tonearm, while the cartridge is chosen by the owner. In the United States the package with arm was listed at USD 2,999.

Key specs that matter

Two speeds, 33 1/3 and 45 rpm, are selected by push-button, and each has its own trim adjustment of up to 6%. An electronically controlled AC synchronous motor drives the sub-platter via a polished precision belt with adjustable tension. The two-part platter combines an aluminium sub-platter, turned by the inner belt, with a machined aluminium main platter topped by a thick rubber mat. Wow and flutter is rated at 0.05% DIN or lower. The plinth measures 454 mm wide, 369 mm deep and 180 mm high, and the turntable weighs about 11 kg. Buyers choose between a walnut plinth and a black one, both in high gloss.

Engineering and use context

The sub-chassis carrying platter and arm floats on three conical springs, isolating them from motor vibration and footfall. Unlike the older design, these springs stand on the bottom of the plinth instead of hanging from the top board, and a steel thread with a pin stops the sub-chassis from moving sideways. The TP 92 arm has an aluminium tube with damping and an anti-resonance ring roughly halfway along it, an underslung counterweight and magnetic anti-skating. Vertical tracking angle and azimuth are adjustable along with tracking force, the headshell is fixed with a single screw, effective mass is 11 g and cable capacitance stays at or below 110 pF. Cueing uses a classic manual lever next to the arm pivot. The motor is powered by an off-board unit supplying plus and minus 16 V DC, which weighs 1.72 kg and measures 111 x 238 x 79 mm. Outputs include RCA, balanced XLR and an earth terminal. Production is in Taiwan.

Pairing

The balanced XLR socket allows a direct link to a phono stage with balanced inputs, which suits a low-output moving-coil cartridge, while the RCA pair covers conventional phono inputs. An arm of 11 g effective mass falls in the medium class and works with many moving-magnet and moving-coil designs.
