The Coturn CT-01 is a portable battery-powered turntable designed by the Bonn industrial designer Benjamin Großjohann and sold as Coturn by Thorens. It was first made in small series and sold directly by Coturn, and it appeared on the Thorens stand at High End Munich 2025 as a collaboration between the two brands. Assembly and testing of every unit take place by hand in Germany. It is priced at EUR 599 from Coturn and about USD 500 in the United States, and a leather case costs about EUR 29.
Key specs that matter
The turntable measures about 318 x 127 x 25 mm and weighs 1.53 kg. The housing is CNC-machined solid aluminium, anodised, with an aluminium platter and a top of scratch-resistant armoured glass that carries an integrated touchscreen for output, volume and speed. It plays 7, 10 and 12 inch records at 33 1/3 and 45 rpm, with speed selected on the touchscreen. The cartridge is an Audio-Technica AT3600, with the ATN3600L as the replacement stylus. A built-in phono preamplifier feeds a 3.5 mm line output and a headphone jack, and Bluetooth with aptX sends audio wirelessly. The battery lasts up to 16 hours and charges over USB-C. Colours are black, dark grey, silver and rosé, and a 2023 art edition by Patrick Niemann was made in a numbered run.
Engineering and use context
A record larger than the turntable itself rests on the compact aluminium platter, and the tonearm retracts into the housing, extending at the press of a button. Automatic stop after four to five seconds of silence at the end of a side saves battery power. With the phono preamplifier on board, the line output connects directly to any amplifier input or active speaker, and the headphone output allows private listening without other equipment. Bluetooth aptX pairs the CT-01 with wireless speakers and headphones. The rigid machined aluminium body protects the mechanism when the turntable is carried, and the armoured glass top resists scratches. A 7 inch adapter for 45 rpm singles and a USB-C cable are included. Coturn has announced a CT-02 with the same design and updated technology.
Pairing
The CT-01 works with Bluetooth speakers and headphones, wired headphones, or powered speakers and amplifiers through its line output. A USB-C power bank or charger keeps it running away from the mains.
Alternatives
The Thorens TD 101 A is a conventional turntable from the Thorens range for a permanent home system.
