The Victrola Stream Onyx is a two-speed belt-drive turntable in the Works with Sonos program, sold under model code VPT-2000-BLK-ATE at a list price of USD 799.99. It sends vinyl over the home network to Sonos, Bluetooth, Roon and UPnP speakers, and it can also run as a conventional record player feeding an amplifier by cable. Victrola offers it in black, matte blue, green and white finishes.

Key specs that matter

A die-cast aluminium platter spins at 33 1/3 or 45 rpm, selected with a speed switch and turned by a belt from a brushless DC motor. Victrola rates wow and flutter at under 0.175%. An aluminium tonearm 225 mm long carries a removable headshell and an adjustable counterweight, with 18.5 mm overhang and tracking error below 2 degrees. The body is built from low-resonance MDF inside a black metal plinth. The blue and green versions use an Audio-Technica AT-VM95E moving-magnet cartridge, and the black version ships with an Ortofon OM5e. Wireless playback runs at up to 24-bit and 48 kHz as lossless FLAC. The unit measures 111 x 345 x 430 mm and weighs 5.5 kg.

Engineering and use context

A phono preamp is built in, so the RCA jacks deliver a line-level signal instead of a raw cartridge output. Beside the analogue outputs there is an RJ45 socket for wired Ethernet, and Wi-Fi to 802.11a/b/g/n/ac covers the wireless link. Setup, network connection and grouping of Sonos speakers are handled in the Victrola Stream app. An illuminated control knob on the deck adjusts volume and selects which playback group receives the signal, so basic control does not require a phone. The package includes a removable dust cover, a silicone mat and a 45 rpm adaptor. Because the headshell detaches, the cartridge can be swapped later without rebuilding the arm.

Pairing

The natural partner is an existing Sonos system, where the turntable appears as a source and can be streamed to one room or several grouped rooms at once. Roon and UPnP compatibility widens the list of network players it can address, and Bluetooth covers portable speakers. In a cabled system, the preamplified RCA signal can feed a receiver, an integrated amplifier or powered speakers through their line-level sockets, with no separate phono stage in between.

Alternatives

The Victrola Stream Carbon is another Works with Sonos turntable from the same Stream series, priced at USD 999.99 and fitted with an Ortofon 2M Red cartridge.
