The Rotation R 5.3 mkII is a turntable with belt drive, built by AVM Audio Video Manufaktur of Germany, placed above the Rotation R 2.3 mkII in the Rotation turntable range. It arrives with a 10 inch AVM tonearm and a dust cover already fitted, while the cartridge is left to the owner, and AVM suggests its own Cadenza Black pickup, built by Ortofon. Silver and black are the two colours AVM lists for it.

Key specs that matter

Playback runs at 33 or 45 rpm, using servo control and an electronic speed change handled by a microprocessor through touch switches. Wow and flutter is rated at 0.10 percent maximum at 33 rpm and 0.09 percent maximum at 45 rpm. The aluminium tonearm is polished, runs in gimbal-mounted bearings and has an effective length of 254 mm. The deck measures 470 x 390 x 175 mm, and its chassis alone weighs 12 kg before the separate aluminium platter is put in place.

Engineering and use context

AVM calls its drive the Elipso Centric belt drive and describes it as producing zero tilting moment on the platter axle. The frame is a massive 60 mm HDF composite with an aluminium cover, and the drive sits on spring-mounted, height-adjustable damper feet. The tonearm uses a standard 12.7 mm headshell, takes a downforce range of 0 to 35 mN or 0 to 3.5 g, and its overhang can be fine-tuned over 15 mm. The mounting distance between platter and tonearm base is 238 mm, following the Linn standard mount. Covering the deck is a resonance-free dust cover made of curved acrylic glass. Under the platter sits an RGB light that can show any colour and can be dimmed or switched off, and a blue platter illumination is listed as an option. Power comes from a 15 V DC supply rated at 1.6 A that accepts 100 to 240 V AC at 47 to 63 Hz. AVM grants a warranty of 2 plus 2 years after online registration, with cartridges excluded.

Pairing

The counterweight accepts cartridges weighing from 5 to 20 g, a wider window than the 6 to 14 g of the smaller Rotation deck, so heavier pickups can also be balanced. Output is a single pair of RCA analogue sockets, and the AVM specification lists no internal phono stage, so an outboard phono preamplifier, or an integrated unit carrying its own phono section, is required before the amplifier chain.

Alternatives

The AVM Rotation R 2.3 mkII is the smaller deck of the same range, with a single motor belt drive, a 37 mm HDF composite plinth, a 3.5 kg platter and a 9 inch tonearm.
