The Rotation R 2.3 mkII is a Rotation series deck with belt drive from AVM Audio Video Manufaktur, the German maker of electronics and analogue sources, and it sits in the Rotation turntable range below the Rotation R 5.3 mkII. AVM supplies it with its own tonearm, a dust cover and an external power supply, while the cartridge is not included. Buyers can order the deck finished in black or in silver aluminium.

Key specs that matter

A single motor turns the platter through a precision belt, and a microprocessor handles the electronic change between 33 and 45 rpm. Speed variance is below 0.15 percent at 33 rpm and below 0.13 percent at 45 rpm, and wow and flutter stays under 0.12 percent at 33 rpm and under 0.10 percent at 45 rpm. The rated signal-to-noise ratio for this model is 70 dB. The supplied 9 inch AVM tonearm runs in a gimbal bearing and has an effective length of 230 mm with an effective mass of 13.5 g. The deck measures 462 x 350 x 155 mm and weighs 12 kg in total, split between an 8.5 kg chassis and a 3.5 kg platter of heavy-duty aluminium.

Engineering and use context

AVM builds the plinth as a massive 37 mm HDF composite board topped with an aluminium cover. The deck uses a spring-loaded mass drive resting on four damping feet whose height can be adjusted. The motor is fed by a universal switch mode power unit rated at 15 V DC and 1.6 A, which accepts 100 to 240 V AC at 47 to 63 Hz. The arm has a standard 12.7 mm headshell, a downforce range of 0 to 35 mN or 0 to 3.5 g, an overhang of 18 mm and a mounting distance of 212 mm, measured from platter to tonearm base, that follows the Linn standard mount. The mkII version adds RGB underglow lighting beneath the turntable, which can be set to any colour, dimmed or switched off completely.

Pairing

The counterweight of the arm balances cartridges weighing from 6 to 14 g, which sets the practical range of pickups for this deck. The signal leaves the deck via one RCA analogue output pair, and no phono preamplifier appears in the maker's specification, meaning a separate phono stage, or an integrated unit that has its own phono input, has to sit ahead of the line-level electronics.

Alternatives

The AVM Rotation R 5.3 mkII sits one step higher in the Rotation line, with an Elipso Centric belt drive, a 60 mm HDF composite frame, a 5.5 kg platter and a 10 inch gimbal-mounted tonearm with a 254 mm effective length.
