The Clearaudio Master Innovation is a turntable from the Innovation range of the German maker, offering 33 1/3, 45 and 78 rpm. Its mass is about 60 kg, counted without tonearm and power supply. Owners of the Innovation Wood can have their deck upgraded to Master Innovation specification in the field.

Key specs that matter

Speed variation is given as less than 0.05 percent regardless of the speed selected. Its main platter is 70 mm thick, made from a high-density synthetic material with a CNC-finished surface and dynamically balanced. Under it sits a 15 mm sub-platter of solid stainless steel. The drive is a custom high-torque 24 V DC motor made for Clearaudio, fed by an included transformer-based 24 V DC supply. The chassis measures 460 x 485 x 396 mm including the tonearm base. Power draw is quoted at 9.5 W maximum, 4.1 W in operation, 2.4 W in standby and 0 W when switched off. Coverage under warranty lasts five years and requires the warranty card to be returned within two weeks.

Engineering and use context

Clearaudio builds the structure from four Tri-star plinths, each a sandwich of solid Panzerholz and aluminium with resonance-damping materials between the layers, and the chassis shape itself is optimised against resonance, with precision CNC-machined surfaces on the wood and metal parts. All feet are adjustable. The main platter floats on the patented ceramic magnetic bearing, known as CMB, while the lower drive platter uses an inverted bearing. The two platters are coupled magnetically, so there is no physical contact between the driven and driving parts. The motor is decoupled from the chassis and damped against resonance, and an additional flywheel supports the drive. For speed regulation an infrared sensor reads the platter and passes its signal to the Optical Speed Control, which corrects the motor in real time. Anodised aluminium parts come in silver or black, and the Panzerholz can be finished in clear lacquer, piano black, or white and red lacquer.

Pairing

The plinth accepts up to three pivoted tonearms at once, so one deck can carry arms fitted with different cartridges, for example a mono and a stereo pickup. It is also compatible with the Clearaudio TT1-MI linear tracking arm. The supply is part of the delivery, while arm and cartridge are chosen separately.

Alternatives

Clearaudio also makes the Reference Jubilee, a limited anniversary deck with a 40 mm Panzerholz plinth and an 8.5 kg platter.
