The Magnezar Turntable (Auto-Clamping) is a direct-drive record player from Klaudio, the South Korean company also known for ultrasonic record cleaners. Klaudio was founded in 2013 and is part of Koolance, which has produced liquid cooling hardware since 2000, and the turntable made its public debut at Pacific Audio Fest in Seattle in June 2023. Its platter floats on magnets without a thrust bearing, and a mechanical clamp flattens the record automatically, which distinguishes this version from the Non-Clamping model.

Key specs that matter

A 45-pole brushless direct-drive motor turns the platter at 33, 45 or 78 rpm. Klaudio quotes wow between 0.02 and 0.05 percent, speed accuracy of plus or minus 0.001 rpm and motor torque of 2 Nm. The platter alone weighs 20 kg and measures 365 mm across and 105 mm high, and the complete unit reaches 55 kg in a chassis of 574 x 413 x 260 mm. Power input accepts 100 to 240 V AC at 50 or 60 Hz with a 1 A maximum draw.

Engineering and use context

Klaudio describes the platter as fully magnetically levitated with no thrust bearing. The platter is hollow at the centre with its mass concentrated towards the rim, and a liquid stabiliser built into it absorbs vibration. Because the levitated platter acts as one effective cushion, the design does away with the usual cushioned feet. The automatic clamp presses the record at the spindle with 1.5 kg of force and around the edge with 4.2 kg, flattening both centre and periphery of the LP. It engages by itself whenever the tonearm is positioned above the record, runs sensor checks for compatibility and can be switched off if not wanted. Klaudio positions this as an alternative to vacuum and ring clamps, which require manual fitting. Electronic braking brings the platter to rest within 4 seconds, and operation is reduced to a simple click for start and stop with no adjustment or calibration required by the owner.

Pairing

The plinth accepts two tonearms. Klaudio offers its own tangential tonearm and a laser pod as options for this deck, and the tangential arm is listed from USD 15,000. With two arm positions, an owner can run a second arm alongside the maker's own, for instance with a different cartridge for mono or 78 rpm records, and any phono stage matched to those cartridges finishes the system.

Alternatives

Klaudio currently offers no other turntable model, as the Magnezar in its clamping and non-clamping versions is its only deck.
