The Magnezar is a direct-drive turntable from Klaudio, the American company founded in 2013 as an offshoot of Koolance, a maker of liquid cooling equipment since 2000. Klaudio first became known for ultrasonic record cleaners and a tangential tonearm. The Magnezar's platter floats entirely on permanent magnets with no mechanical thrust bearing, and the Non-Clamping version described here omits the automatic record clamps of the full model.
Key specs that matter
It plays at 33, 45 and 78 rpm through a direct-drive motor. Wow and flutter is below 0.05%, speed accuracy is about 0.001% and motor torque is 2 Nm. The platter measures 368 mm across and 76 mm deep and weighs 13.2 kg. The turntable measures 574 x 413 x 190 mm and weighs 42.2 kg. Input power is 100 to 240 V AC at 1 A maximum.
Engineering and use context
The motor is a 45-pole brushless design developed by Klaudio, integrated into the turntable so that the plinth forms the stator and the platter the rotor. It holds speed without user adjustment or calibration, and starts and stops with a single click. An electromagnetic brake halts the platter within four seconds. The platter is fully magnetically levitated, which Klaudio describes as the first time such levitation has been achieved at this weight, and it replaces the thrust bearing, the usual source of bearing noise in turntables. The platter is hollow with an empty centre, concentrating mass at the rim for the inertia of a much heavier platter. Liquid on the platter absorbs imbalances in the record and stabilises its motion, drawing on the parent company's experience with fluids, and the platter area is lit. Klaudio says the levitation also replaces conventional cushioned feet with a single cushion that absorbs vibration. The chassis is aluminium. The Magnezar supports Klaudio's tangential tonearm and laser pod, sold separately, and has a mount for a second tonearm, so two arms can be fitted at once. The full clamping version adds automatic spindle and peripheral clamping, which flattens both the centre and the edge of the record. Klaudio gives a three-year warranty. It showed a prototype at the Pacific Audio Fest in Seattle in 2022 before launching the Magnezar the following year.
Pairing
The tangential arm option keeps the stylus aligned with the groove across the whole record, and the second arm mount allows a mono or 78 rpm cartridge alongside a stereo one. A phono stage and a solid, level support are required.
Alternatives
Klaudio makes no other turntable besides the two versions of the Magnezar.
