A DC servo motor, fed from an external supply rather than directly from the mains, turns the cast aluminium platter, topped by a rubber mat, through a belt. The belt comes already fitted around the platter and held with tape, so setup takes little effort. A rotary dial on the left of the plinth selects the speed. Output is 2.5 mV at 1 kHz with the equalizer off and 150 mV with it switched on. The chassis measures 414 x 342 x 132 mm and weighs 5.8 kg including the dust cover.

Engineering and use context

Denon's static balanced arm follows an S shape and has a 220 mm effective length and 16 mm of overhang and an adjustable anti-skate dial. Tracking force can be set from 0 to 4.0 g in 0.1 g steps, and the arm accepts cartridges weighing 5.0 to 13.0 g. The removable 11 g headshell uses the standard universal mount, so other cartridges can be fitted easily. The supplied moving magnet cartridge carries a spherical diamond stylus, works best at 2.0 g, and takes the DSN-85 as its replacement. Once the stylus reaches the run-out groove, the arm rises on its own, which spares the stylus when nobody is nearby. A type A USB 2.0 port writes recordings straight to a memory stick as MP3 at 192 kbps or WAV at 44.1 kHz and 16 bit, with no computer involved. Power comes from an external adapter that accepts 100 to 240 V AC and supplies 12 V at 2 A. Consumption is 10 W in use and 0.5 W or less in standby. The removable dust cover can also hold an album sleeve upright for display.

Pairing

One pair of RCA sockets switches between phono and line level. With the internal equalizer engaged, the deck connects through the included RCA cables to any amplifier line input, an active speaker or a receiver lacking a phono stage. Owners who already have a dedicated MM phono preamplifier can switch the equalizer off and send the raw cartridge signal to it instead, keeping the USB function for archiving records.
