The DP-400 is a semi-automatic, belt-driven turntable from Denon supplied with a pre-mounted MM cartridge and a built-in, switchable phono equalizer. It plays 33 1/3, 45 and 78 rpm records, and the tonearm rises automatically once a side finishes, so the deck can be used without a separate phono stage.
Key specs that matter
Power reaches the platter by belt from a DC servo motor. Denon quotes wow and flutter of 0.1% WRMS and an S/N figure of 62 dB. The tonearm is a static balanced type with an effective length of 220 mm and an overhang of 16 mm. Its stylus pressure scale runs from 0 to 4.0 g in 0.1 g steps, and it accepts cartridges weighing 5.0 to 13.0 g. The supplied MM cartridge has an optimum tracking force of 2.0 g and uses the DSN-85 replacement stylus. Output is 2.5 mV at 1 kHz with the equalizer off and 150 mV with it on. The deck measures 411 x 348 x 132 mm and weighs 5.6 kg.
Engineering and use context
An integrated auto sensor monitors and controls platter speed, and a speed selector sets the three playback speeds. The tonearm is curved with a horizontal tracking angle, and its auto lift and playback stop raise it about 10 seconds before the groove end and stop playback, though it does not swing back to its rest by itself. The headshell is removable, so cartridges from other makers can be fitted. The plinth is heavy and damped, the platter is cast aluminium, and a ground stud sits beside the outputs. The head shell weighs 11 g including screws, nuts, washers and lead wires, which matters when fitting a different cartridge. The main bearing uses ceramic construction. The dust cover is removable and doubles as a stand for displaying an album sleeve. Power comes from an AC adapter rated at 12.0 V and 2.0 A, and consumption is 10 W in use and 0.5 W or less in standby. The DP-400 was announced in February 2019 at GBP 449 in black or white plinth colours. The frequency range is given as 20 Hz to 20 kHz, and RCA outputs are fitted, with no USB connection.
Pairing
With the equalizer switched on, the DP-400 feeds a line input of an integrated amplifier, receiver or powered speaker pair directly. With the equalizer bypassed, the deck feeds a phono input or an external phono stage, and the tonearm also accepts an optional moving coil cartridge.
Alternatives
The DP-450USB is the Denon turntable that adds USB recording to a belt-driven design.
