The Schröder CB-9 is a 9-inch tonearm designed by Frank Schröder and supplied through Dohmann Audio as the compact partner of the 12-inch CB-11. Schröder conceived the CB range in parallel with the Dohmann Helix One turntable. The letters CB refer to a captive bearing type. Rather than the patented magnetic bearing technology found in other Schröder designs, this series turns to hybrid ceramic bearings. Its short wand makes the CB-9 the version that suits turntables with a standard 9-inch arm position, while a separate Schröder Reference SQ tonearm is sold alongside the CB models.

Key specs that matter

The arm wand measures 9 inches, giving an effective length of 239.3 mm. Distance from pivot to spindle is 222.0 mm, overhang is 17.3 mm and the offset angle is 23 degrees. Three cartridge mounting plates change the effective mass - 12.5 g with the ultra-light plate, 14 g with the standard one and 19 g with the heavy plate. Friction in the bearings is specified as 2 mg vertically and 3.5 mg horizontally. The 23 mm shaft needs a 24 to 25 mm hole in the armboard plus an M6 tapped hole for fixing. Wands are offered in carbon fiber or kingwood, and the metal parts are black. The tonearm cable is 1 m long, and other lengths can be made to order.

Engineering and use context

Friction this low matters because any drag at the pivot works against the stylus as it follows the groove, and Dohmann gives the CB bearings the lowest measured friction figure of any traditional bearing arm. Inside the arm, specific zones are laid out to lead vibration away from sensitive areas, which keeps motor and platter energy from reaching the cantilever. The wand is a layered build of carbon fiber and composites chosen for stiffness in torsion and bending while keeping internal damping high. The owner can set tracking force, arm height, overhang, offset angle and azimuth, and anti-skating comes from a magnet that applies up to 2.3 g without mechanical contact.

Pairing

The armboard should put the mounting surface 25 to 60 mm below the top of the platter, ideally 30 to 35 mm. The ultra-light plate keeps the mass low enough for high-compliance moving magnet cartridges, while the heavy plate moves it toward heavier low-compliance moving coil bodies, so one arm can follow a change of cartridge.

Alternatives

The Schröder CB-11 is the 12-inch sister model, with 282.0 mm of effective length and an 18 g standard effective mass.
