The Schröder CB-11 is the long member of the Schröder CB tonearm family offered through Dohmann Audio, fitted with a 12-inch arm wand. The CB series was developed by Frank Schröder alongside the Helix One turntable, and unlike his patented magnetic bearing arms it relies on hybrid ceramic bearings. A shorter 9-inch model, the CB-9, completes the pair, and the long version is also known as the CB-L.

Key specs that matter

Effective length is 282.0 mm, the pivot sits 267.5 mm from the spindle, and the geometry uses an overhang of 14.52 mm plus an offset angle of 19.35 degrees. Bearing friction is quoted at 2 mg in the vertical plane and 3.5 mg in the horizontal plane. The arm shaft has a diameter of 23 mm and mounts in a 24 to 25 mm hole with an M6 tapped hole. Effective mass is set by the cartridge plate - 18 g with the standard plate, 23 g with the optional heavy plate and 16.5 g with the optional ultra-light plate. The wand is available in carbon fibre or kingwood.

Engineering and use context

The ceramic hybrid bearings are magnetically centred, and Dohmann calls their friction the lowest measured on any traditional bearing arm. Horizontal movement is damped magnetically. The structure has defined physical zones that direct vibration away from key areas, so energy from the turntable does not travel into the cantilever. The multi-layer wand combines carbon fibre and composite materials for high torsional and bending stiffness together with high internal damping. VTF, VTA, overhang, offset angle and azimuth are all adjustable, and anti-skating works through a frictionless magnetic system rated up to 2.3 g. Signal wiring is cryogenically treated copper in a single run from the cartridge to the RCA plugs, 1 m long as standard, with custom lengths on request.

Pairing

The mounting surface should sit between 25 and 60 mm below the platter top, with 30 to 35 mm given as the best range, so the armboard height of the chosen turntable needs checking. The three cartridge plates allow the effective mass to be moved over a 6.5 g span, which helps when switching between cartridges of different compliance and body weight. A Dohmann Helix One is the turntable the CB design was created with, and the 12-inch wand length calls for an armboard cut for long arms rather than the common 9-inch position.

Alternatives

The Schröder CB-9 carries the same bearings and adjustments on a 9-inch wand with an effective length of 239.3 mm.
