The Profiler 9 inch is a radial tonearm from Clearaudio of Erlangen, Germany, which the maker describes as a link between two of its arm families. It takes technical features from the established Satisfy Kardan range and combines them with parts of the newer Tracer generation. Clearaudio developed it as the intended partner for the turntables of its Performance series, a line that includes the Innovation models, and buyers choose between black and silver.
Key specs that matter
Effective length is 239.58 mm and the pivot sits 222 mm from the spindle, giving an overhang of 17.58 mm. The offset angle is 24.5 degrees. Adjustable cartridges may weigh from 3.5 g to 17.0 g. The arm is 300 mm long overall and weighs about 510 g together with its counterweight. Its bearing layout pairs a horizontal sapphire bearing with a vertical ball bearing. The body combines coloured aluminium with stainless steel parts, and the arm tube is aluminium as well. The signal cable is 1.1 m of Clearaudio Direct Wire PLUS ending in RCA plugs, and the warranty is two years once the arm is registered within 14 days of purchase.
Engineering and use context
Clearaudio singles out two changes that come from mixing the two series. The vertical bearing uses a double bearing, and a resonance protection dome is fitted, and both are meant to improve how smoothly the arm moves and how it behaves with vibration. The tube is made of a high-grade aluminium alloy with special damping points along its length, which is how the design keeps weight low while holding stiffness and controlled resonance. The Tracer, one of its two parent designs, uses the same pairing of a horizontal sapphire bearing and a vertical ball bearing. The Profiler is shorter overall than the Satisfy Kardan and the Tracer, although all three work at the same mounting distance. Continuous Direct Wire PLUS is used for the signal from the headshell to the RCA plugs.
Pairing
With a 3.5 to 17 g window the Profiler accepts most moving-magnet and moving-coil cartridges, including the 8.4 g Clearaudio Performer V2 and the 7 g Concerto V2. On turntables from other makers the arm board must be drilled for the Clearaudio mounting distance. The RCA termination connects directly to any phono stage.
Alternatives
The Clearaudio Tracer has a torsionally rigid carbon tube in place of aluminium, magnetic anti-skating in the pivot axis and a weight of about 500 g.
