The SuperLine is a phono stage for moving coil cartridges from Naim Audio, built into the company's aluminium reference enclosure with a bead-blasted, black anodised front panel. It handles moving coil cartridges only and, like the smaller StageLine, draws its power from another Naim component rather than a mains transformer of its own. Naim now lists the SuperLine as discontinued.

Key specs that matter

Gain is 64 dB at 1 kHz, while a SuperLine E variant was built with 58 dB for cartridges of higher output. THD+N is under 0.005% measured with a 500 microvolt input at 1 kHz, and RIAA accuracy is held within 0.1 dB from 20 Hz to 20 kHz. Input sensitivity runs from 100 to 500 microvolts, or 200 microvolts to 1 mV on the E, and the input overloads at 5 mV RMS at 1 kHz, or 10 mV RMS on the E. Frequency response extends from 10 Hz to beyond 200 kHz at the 3 dB points, with a 10 Hz high pass filter. Signal to noise ratio is 82 dB A-weighted referenced to a 500 microvolt input, or 78 dB on the E, and crosstalk exceeds 80 dB from 20 Hz to 20 kHz. Inputs come as both BNC and RCA. The case is 207 mm wide, 87 mm high and 314 mm deep, and the unit weighs 7.7 kg.

Engineering and use context

Cartridge matching uses plug-in loading rather than front-panel switches. Two 5-pin DIN sockets accept loading plugs, and the available values - 10 kohm, 1 kohm, 500 ohm, 220 ohm and 100 ohm of resistance plus 100 pF, 1 nF, 5.6 nF and 10 nF of capacitance - combine into 20 settings. Inside, the circuit boards sit on a suspension system for delicate electronics of the kind Naim uses in its 500 Series, which isolates them from the case. The 24 V supply comes from compatible Naim units, and Naim lists the NaimUniti, NAIT XS, SuperNait, FlatCap XS, HiCap and SuperCap together with various NAC preamplifiers. With an outboard supply, a SuperCap or HiCap can be added later without replacing the phono stage itself. The BNC input offers a locking connection alongside the RCA pair for tonearm cables terminated that way.

Pairing

A low-output moving coil cartridge is the intended source for the standard version, with the E version meant for cartridges that deliver a stronger signal. Owners who run a Naim preamplifier from the compatible list can connect the SuperLine without a further power unit, while a system built around another brand's amplifier requires a stand-alone FlatCap XS, HiCap or SuperCap.

Alternatives

The Naim StageLine is the brand's smaller phono stage, built as separate MM and MC versions in a case 121 mm wide.
