The NVC TT is a phono preamplifier covering MM and MC pickups, housed in the half-width aluminium enclosure of the Naim New Classic range. It was designed to work with the NSC 222 and NAC 332 preamplifiers of that range, and Naim says it draws on ideas from its SuperLine phono stage, the Statement amplifiers and the Solstice Special Edition turntable system. The unit has no mains transformer of its own and takes its power from a separate supply over a cable.

Key specs that matter

Gain is 42 dB for MM, while MC offers a switch between 61 dB and 67 dB. The MM input is loaded at 47 kohm and 100 pF. THD+N stays below 0.005%, referenced to a 50 mV input on MM and to 1.5 mV on both MC settings. Headroom is 22 dB for MM referenced to 5 mV, 23 dB on low MC gain and 17 dB on high MC gain, both referenced to 0.5 mV. Maximum output reaches 8 V rms, RIAA accuracy on MM is within plus or minus 0.1 dB and MM crosstalk exceeds 75 dB. A partial IEC low-frequency cut gives -2 dB at 20 Hz and -3 dB at 14 Hz. The case is 214 mm wide, 70 mm high and 317 mm deep, and weighs 3.4 kg.

Engineering and use context

Each cartridge type has its own RCA input pair, chosen by a switch, so two arms or two cartridges can stay connected. For MC loading, switches on the back give 16 resistive and 16 capacitive values, and the factory preset is MC mode with 100 ohm and 1,000 pF. These switches have no effect on the MM input. The signal leaves through a 5-pin DIN socket or a pair of RCA jacks, while power arrives on an 8-pin DIN input. The supply can come from the NSC 222 or NAC 332 themselves or from the dedicated NPX TT unit, which Naim offers as the upgrade path. A three-position rear switch sets the brightness of the illuminated front logo to high, medium or low. An Auto Standby mode puts the unit into standby after 20 minutes, where it draws under 0.5 W, and the alternative Instant On setting leaves it permanently powered.

Pairing

With an NSC 222 or NAC 332, one cable carries power into the stage and the 5-pin DIN lead returns the audio to a powered DIN input on the preamplifier. Older Naim amplifiers and third-party amplifiers cannot feed it, so there the NPX TT is required, and the output then goes over the supplied DIN lead or a separately bought RCA interconnect to a standard line input. The high MC gain setting covers low-output coils, while the MM gain suits standard moving-magnet designs.

Alternatives

The Naim SuperLine is another phono stage from the brand and the source of several design ideas used in the NVC TT.
