The RP-102 is the phono stage of Vitus Audio's Reference Series, the Danish manufacturer's entry range below the Signature and Masterpiece lines. It succeeds the RP-100 of the mid-2000s and the RP-101, and for this version Vitus redesigned the main board, power supply and control logic, adding mono-cartridge support and moving all gain and load settings to the front panel or an optional remote.
Key specs that matter
Inputs are one balanced XLR pair and two single-ended RCA pairs, with 80-ohm outputs. Moving-coil gain is adjustable from 51dB to 75dB in 3dB steps, and moving-magnet gain from 27dB to 51dB in 3dB steps. MC loading offers 23 steps from 40 ohms to 2 kilohms, and the MM side offers its own range of load values. Upper bandwidth extends to 800kHz and THD+N is below 0.01%. The unit uses an external power supply, connected by two power interconnects, and the main chassis measures 65 x 175 x 275mm and weighs about 4kg. Standard finishes are Pure White, Jet Black and Warm Silver, with optional special colours such as Titanium Orange, Dark Champagne and Titanium Grey.
Engineering and use context
The MC input uses an active moving-coil gain stage reaching 75dB, which is enough for most very low-output cartridges without a step-up transformer, and Vitus designed it to lower noise compared with the previous version. Placing the power supply in a separate chassis keeps transformer fields and rectification noise away from the sensitive input stages, which amplify signals as small as a few hundred microvolts. Changing load and gain on most high-end phono stages means opening the case or reaching for rear-panel switches, but the RP-102 switches every setting electronically from the front panel or the remote, allowing different values to be compared quickly from the listening position. Mono support lets owners of dedicated mono cartridges use them correctly. Vitus builds its products on modules, so later circuit improvements can be installed in existing units. The balanced XLR input suits tonearms wired for balanced connection, keeping the low-level signal free of common-mode noise on its way from the turntable.
Pairing
The RP-102 connects to any line-level preamplifier or integrated amplifier, and its balanced output suits Vitus's own Reference Series amplifiers such as the RI-101 integrated and RL-102 preamplifier. Its MC gain and fine load steps suit most moving-coil cartridges, and two RCA inputs allow two turntables or tonearms to be connected at once.
Alternatives
Vitus Audio's own SP-103 is the Signature Series phono stage with a modular design derived from the MP-P201 Mk.II.
