The MP-P201 Mk.III is a two-chassis phono stage from Vitus Audio, the Danish company founded by Hans-Ole Vitus in Herning. It belongs to the top MP line of the range, and the Mk.III version uses the discrete gain-stage modules developed for the MP-L201 line preamplifier, reworked for much lower noise so that the lowest-output moving-coil cartridges can be used. The design is split into two chassis, with the power supply housed separately from the audio circuits.
Key specs that matter
There are two balanced XLR and two RCA inputs. MC gain is selectable in ten steps from 50 to 75 dB and MM gain in eleven steps from 20 to 47 dB. MC loading covers 21 values from 10 ohms to 2 kohm. Output impedance is 80 ohms and THD+N is below 0.01%. Bandwidth extends to 800 kHz. The audio chassis measures 135 x 435 x 435 mm and weighs 22 kg, and the power supply measures 135 x 435 x 470 mm and weighs 31 kg.
Engineering and use context
Vitus builds the gain stages as discrete modules rather than using integrated op-amps, and the Mk.III modules are optimised for noise at the very low signal levels of moving-coil cartridges. Placing the power transformer and supply components in a separate chassis keeps their magnetic fields and vibration away from the audio boards, which lowers the noise floor. Gain is chosen according to the output voltage of the cartridge, so the stage runs with correct headroom rather than with a fixed high gain. Gain and load can be changed from the fascia buttons or the handset during playback, which makes cartridge matching practical without opening the chassis. Moving-magnet, moving-coil and mono cartridges are all supported. With two inputs of each type, two tonearms or two turntables can remain connected, each with its own settings. The balanced inputs suit low-output MC cartridges wired balanced from the tonearm, a connection that rejects common-mode noise picked up by the cable.
Pairing
The low output impedance drives long balanced runs to any line preamplifier, and the balanced design pairs naturally with Vitus Audio's own MP-L201 or SL-103 preamplifiers. The highest gain settings cover MC cartridges with very low output. The two heavy chassis need separate shelves or a wide rack, with the umbilical cable routed away from interconnects.
Alternatives
Vitus Audio's SP-103 carries the same technology into a smaller modular phono stage with an external power supply.
