The E-GLO is an all-valve phono preamplifier from European Audio Team (EAT), the Czech analogue specialist better known for its turntables, with separate paths for magnet and coil cartridge types. Its signal path contains no semiconductors at all, and the valves sit behind heat sinks shaped to recall the two spools of a reel-to-reel tape deck. British pricing stood at GBP 7,998, and EAT later followed it with the E-Glo 2 and smaller E-Glo variants.

Key specs that matter

Gain is 46 dB for moving-magnet use, while moving-coil operation offers two settings of 70 dB and 76 dB. At 70 dB the MC input can be loaded at 10, 20, 40, 80, 150, 300, 600 or 1,200 ohms, and at 76 dB the choices move down to 2, 5, 10, 20, 40, 80, 150 or 300 ohms. For MM cartridges, capacitance steps of 50, 150, 270, 370, 520, 620, 740 and 840 pF are listed. Output impedance stays below 150 ohms. Signal-to-noise is quoted at 65 dBV for both inputs, rising to 80 dBV (MM) and 79 dBV (MC) with IEC-A weighting. The chassis measures 435 x 60 x 250 mm, and the case comes in high-gloss Makassar or high-gloss piano black.

Engineering and use context

Four ECC83 and two ECC88 valves make up the tube complement. Moving-coil signals enter a fully balanced input built around a Lundahl LL1932 step-up transformer with an amorphous core, and the two MC gain positions are selected by switching the transformer. RIAA equalisation is split and fully passive, so none of the curve is formed inside a global negative feedback loop. Output coupling capacitors come from Mundorf, other positions use WIMA parts, and the sockets are Mundorf connectors with Teflon insulation. Mains power is handled in a separate external box with a custom-made toroidal transformer, double shielding between primary and secondary windings and dedicated supplies for the valve stage, which keeps the transformer field away from the low-level circuitry. A five-year warranty applied in the UK.

Pairing

The MM gain suits typical moving-magnet cartridges, while the step-up path covers low-output moving coils, with the higher-gain, lower-impedance bank aimed at designs that need very light loading. The low output impedance can drive the line input of an ordinary preamplifier or integrated amplifier over normal cable lengths, and EAT turntables with C-Note tonearms form a single-brand front end.

Alternatives

The EAT E-Glo S is a hybrid phono stage with ECC83 valves in its first two gain stages, five gain settings and loading from 10 ohms to 47 kohms.
