The Luxman E-250 is a solid-state phono amplifier that handles moving magnet cartridges as well as high and low output moving coil designs. It is built around an NF type equalizer circuit with custom Luxman parts, and its first stage uses parallel-connected FETs to lower noise. It follows the E-200, which Luxman released in 2008, and keeps the same compact equalizer format. The chassis measures 364 x 81 x 274 mm, weighs 4.3 kg and carries a blaster white aluminium front panel.

Key specs that matter

Gain is 38 dB for MM, 57 dB for MC HIGH and 66 dB for MC LOW, with input sensitivity of 3.2 mV, 0.37 mV and 0.12 mV in that order. MM load can be set to 34k, 47k, 56k or 100k ohm, while MC HIGH presents 40 ohm and MC LOW 2.5 ohm. Rated output at 1 kHz is 250 mV from a 300 ohm output impedance. Total harmonic distortion is 0.003%. Signal-to-noise ratio (IHF-A) reaches 90 dB on MM, 83 dB on MC HIGH and 80 dB on MC LOW. RIAA deviation stays within 0.3 dB from 20 Hz to 20 kHz on MM and within 0.5 dB on both MC settings, and channel separation at 10 kHz is 91 dB.

Engineering and use context

MC signals pass through a built-in step-up transformer with two gain positions, whose left and right channels use separate super permalloy cores so that low impedance MC cartridges can also be used. Two unbalanced line inputs let two turntables or two tonearms stay connected, and one unbalanced output feeds the preamplifier or integrated amplifier. Beside the resistive load selector there is a capacitance selector with 0, 100, 220 and 320 pF positions, so both parameters of an MM cartridge can be matched on the rear panel. A monaural switch combines left and right for mono discs, and a low-cut switch removes low frequency signals caused by warped discs. The front panel also carries an articulator switch with a demagnetizing function for the cartridge. Power draw is only 7 W, and the unit is supplied in 230 V or 115 V versions.

With its single RCA output, the E-250 suits any amplifier that has line inputs but no phono board of its own. The three gain settings cover MM types and low output MC models with nothing else in the chain.
