The Phonio Light from Auris Audio is a transistor phono preamplifier handling both moving-magnet and moving-coil pickups, made by the Serbian firm whose range also covers valve amplifiers and turntables. It sits below the standard Phonio in the range and differs from it mainly in the way it is powered - where the Phonio ships with a dedicated linear power supply, the Light model runs from a compact 16 V AC adapter that can be placed away from the unit to keep electromagnetic interference out of the circuit. The maker's store lists it at EUR 479, against EUR 959 for the Phonio, and in Australia it has been sold for AUD 1,100.

Key specs that matter

Moving-magnet gain is 43.2 dB with a load of 47 kohm in parallel with 150 pF. For moving coils there are three gain levels of 58, 64 and 67 dB and four resistive loads of 70, 100, 150 and 400 ohm, while capacitance can be set to 1000, 2000, 3200 or 4200 pF. The MM input accepts up to 60 mV at 1 kHz and the MC input up to 4 mV in low gain, and either stage can swing 5 V at the output. THD+N is 0.0035 percent on MM and 0.023 percent on MC, both measured at 1 V out, while plain THD is 0.0003 and 0.002 percent. Unweighted signal-to-noise exceeds 88 dB for MM and 70.5 dB for MC in low gain. Response from 20 Hz to 80 kHz stays within 0.3 dB, the same tolerance Auris quotes for RIAA accuracy.

Engineering and use context

Separate pairs of RCA input sockets serve the two cartridge types, so a second tonearm or a second deck can remain plugged in, and the active input is chosen with switches on the front panel. The RIAA equalisation is built around Sound Plus low-noise operational amplifiers. Inside, a high-capacitance filter stage feeds low-dropout regulators combined with bipolar transistors, a topology chosen by Auris for a high power supply rejection ratio. The aluminium housing is meant to keep vibration away from the circuit boards. Factory defaults are the highest resistive load and the lowest capacitance, and a 0.5 mV input gives 1.15 V at the output in high gain, 0.75 V in mid gain and 0.4 V in low gain, which shows how much level each MC setting adds.

Pairing

With three MC gain steps the Phonio Light covers everything from very low-output moving coils on the highest setting to higher-output MC types on the lowest setting, and the separate MM input handles moving-magnet cartridges with its fixed standard load. A single pair of RCA outputs goes to a line-level input on the partnering amplifier or preamplifier. Auris also makes turntables such as the Blues S and MYSTiK, and either deck can feed this stage directly.

Alternatives

The Auris Audio Phonio is the larger phono stage of the brand, offering MC gain of up to 69 dB from two fully separate MM and MC circuits.
