The Auris aRIAA is a compact phono stage from the Serbian maker Auris Audio, sold as a 2 in 1 unit covering both MM and MC pickups. Auris describes it as an advanced, multifunctional phono stage with universal connectivity, intended for many turntables and cartridges and positioned as an affordable MM/MC stage. The input type is picked with switches on its front panel, so one small box serves either cartridge family.

Key specs that matter

Connection is simple, with one RCA input and a single RCA output. Gain is 44 dB in MM mode and 67 dB in MC mode. The maximum input level at 1 kHz is 60 mV for MM and 4 mV for MC, and both modes can deliver up to 5 V at the output. Auris quotes a frequency response from 20 Hz to 80 kHz within plus or minus 0.3 dB, and RIAA accuracy is held to that same tolerance. Unweighted signal to noise ratio exceeds 78 dB for MM and 64 dB for MC referenced to 1 V. THD+N at 1 V is 0.01% for MM and 0.07% for MC, the latter measured from 100 Hz to 22 kHz, while plain THD is 0.0006% and 0.004% respectively. Input sensitivity is 780 mV out for a 5 mV MM input, and in MC mode 0.5 mV in yields 1.1 V out. The case measures 12.5 x 13 x 4.5 cm and weighs 450 g.

Engineering and use context

The gain circuits rely on proprietary Sound Plus operational amplifiers arranged in an advanced topology, which Auris says gives precise RIAA equalization while suppressing hum and harmonics. Power comes from a compact external 16 V AC adapter, kept outside the chassis to limit interference. Inside, the supply regulation pairs an LDO regulator with a BJT, aimed at an ultra low noise floor and a high power supply rejection ratio. Loading is set with DIP switches for the left and right channels. Switches 1 and 3 select the MC resistance, 400 ohm with both off or 100 ohm with them on. Switches 2 and 4 handle capacitance, giving 1000 pF with both off or 2000 pF with them on. Together these settings let the owner match MC loading and gain to the cartridge in use.

Pairing

The single RCA output is wired to an unused amplifier line input, such as the AUX or CD socket of an amplifier. Its two resistance values and two capacitance steps give a choice of loads for the cartridge on the turntable ahead of it.
