The P2 is the network music hub from Lumin, the brand of Pixel Magic Systems Ltd., and it folds streaming, digital conversion and preamplification into a single aluminium case intended as the centre of a stereo system. It accepts analogue, digital and HDMI sources as well as network streams, so every connected source passes through one volume control. Lumin set the recommended European price at EUR 10,990.
Key specs that matter
Lumin fits a pair of ESS SABRE32 ES9038Pro converters, each dedicated to a single channel as a dual-mono layout. Network playback reaches DSD512 and PCM at 16 to 32 bit up to 384 kHz, while the AES, optical and coaxial inputs accept PCM up to 192 kHz at 24 bit plus DSD64 as DoP. Nine inputs are fitted in total - USB audio, AES, TOSLINK, coaxial S/PDIF, one balanced XLR and one RCA analogue pair, and three HDMI ports with 4K passthrough. Analogue outputs deliver 6 Vrms on XLR (pin 2 hot) and 3 Vrms on RCA. Digital outputs comprise USB, BNC S/PDIF and one HDMI. The case measures 350 mm wide, 380 mm deep and 107 mm high, weighs 12 kg and is offered in black anodised or raw aluminium.
Engineering and use context
A newer system-on-chip processor gives the P2 more computing headroom than earlier Lumin platforms, which the company uses for upsampling PCM to its highest rate and DSD to DSD256. Timing comes from a Femto clock system with distribution handled by an FPGA. Volume is adjusted in the digital domain by Leedh Processing, a lossless algorithm, rather than by an extra analogue attenuator stage. Lundahl transformers sit at the outputs, and the internal supply uses two toroidal transformers with separate rails for the digital and analogue sections plus low-noise linear regulation. For the network link there is a Gigabit SFP cage for optical fibre next to a standard 1000Base-T Ethernet socket, the fibre option giving electrical isolation from the rest of the network. Supported file types include DSF, DIFF, DoP, FLAC, ALAC, WAV and AIFF.
Pairing
With volume handled internally and 6 Vrms available on XLR, the P2 connects straight to a stereo power amplifier with no preamp in between. Television audio reaches the system over HDMI ARC, and the CEC protocol allows the TV remote to change the level. Services and protocols include Roon Ready and AirPlay, the Connect modes of TIDAL, Qobuz and Spotify, plus Audirvana, JPLAY and UPnP or OpenHome, all controlled from the Lumin App.
Alternatives
The Lumin P1 Mini is a smaller streamer, DAC and preamp built around one ES9038Q2M chip with five inputs including HDMI ARC.
