This Majik DSM is the 2020 generation of Linn's single-box music player, catalogued by the company as the Majik DSM/4 and described as a network music player with integrated preamplifier and power amplifier. It was introduced in August 2020 and remained in production until April 2025, when a fifth generation took over. Linn builds it in Glasgow, with a US launch price of USD 3,835. The line itself goes back to the Majik DSI of 2009 and the first Majik DSM of 2011.
Key specs that matter
The class D power stage delivers 50 W per channel into 8 ohms and 100 W per channel into 4 ohms. Wired inputs include four HDMI 2.0 connections, an HDMI ARC link for a television, Toslink, a coaxial S/PDIF socket that can act as input or output, USB Audio Class 2 and an analogue pair that switches between line level and moving magnet phono. Networking runs over 100Base-T Ethernet or 802.11ac Wi-Fi, with Bluetooth 4.2 using SBC. Files in FLAC, WAV, AIFF, ALAC, MP3, AAC, OGG, WMA and DSD are accepted, at sample rates from 7.35 kHz to 192 kHz and 16 to 24 bits. The line output gives 2 V rms at volume step 80 from 300 ohms with a 110 dB dynamic range, and the front headphone socket supplies 61 mW into 16 ohms or 83 mW into 32 ohms. The chassis is 350 mm wide and deep, 100 mm high, and weighs 4.1 kg.
Engineering and use context
For this generation Linn brought parts of its Katalyst DAC architecture down from the higher ranges, including better upsampling, a low-jitter word clock and a lower-noise voltage reference. The phono input is a hybrid analogue and digital stage derived from the Urika II. A newly designed headphone amplifier was added with lower noise and distortion than before. The case is black aluminium with a higher-resolution TFT display on the front panel, and a faster processor made room for extra features. Control is possible through the supplied remote, the Linn App or the Kazoo app, and six customisable smart buttons on the unit give one-touch access to chosen content. Streaming support covers Tidal, Qobuz, Spotify, AirPlay, Roon, TuneIn and Calm Radio. Continuous mains draw is 120 W, and the unit uses 15 W in sleep.
Pairing
Rated for 4 ohm loads, the Majik DSM can drive most passive standmount or floorstanding speakers without a separate power amplifier, connected through posts that take banana plugs or spades. A television joins through HDMI ARC, games consoles or disc players through the HDMI 2.0 inputs, and a moving magnet turntable uses the switchable analogue pair. The variable line output allows an external power amplifier or subwoofer to be added.
Alternatives
Linn's Selekt DSM is another network music player from the same Glasgow maker and can be compared with the Majik DSM.
