The DNC, short for Digital Network Client, is an Audionet streaming client and digital-to-analogue converter. It plays files from computers, servers, hard drives and USB sticks, streams over cable or wireless, and also contains an FM receiver with RDS. Its brushed aluminium front plate is offered in black or silver anodising, and the display can be ordered in red or blue, while the cover and sides are black anodised aluminium over a black varnished steel chassis.

Key specs that matter

Measured at the -3 dB points the bandwidth is 0 to 96,000 Hz, and the converter handles sample rates from 32 kHz to 192 kHz. THD+N is below -104 dB, slew rate is 10 V per microsecond and channel separation exceeds 100 dB at 20 kHz. Maximum output is 3.2 V RMS on RCA and 6.4 V RMS on XLR, with real output impedance of 24 ohm and 48 ohm respectively. The case is 430 x 70 x 310 mm and weighs 8 kg. Consumption stays under 1 W in standby and peaks at 85 W.

Engineering and use context

Incoming data is upsampled asynchronously to 24 bit at the top supported sample rate by Audionet Intelligent Sampling Technology. No coupling capacitors sit in the analogue path, which is DC coupled throughout. A 50 VA toroidal transformer feeds 26,000 uF of main filter capacitance, each op-amp gets a further 8,000 uF locally, and voltage is stabilised in two stages. Supported formats include WAV and FLAC at up to that rate, ALAC up to 96 kHz, and AIFF, with TIDAL, Qobuz, Deezer, internet radio, podcasts and UPnP servers available. Signal processing offers five minimum phase equalisers per main channel, a parametric equaliser and a delay manager covering 0 to 7 m. Operation is possible through the Audionet Music Manager apps for Android and iOS, Remote Control Point software on PC or Mac, RS-232 for home automation and a metal RC2 handset.

Pairing

Digital inputs are two coaxial RCA at 75 ohm, two TosLink optical, one Neutrik AES/EBU XLR at 110 ohm and a USB Audio type B port, plus USB 2.0, Ethernet and a WLAN antenna socket. Analogue outputs are a gold-plated RCA pair along with a pair of balanced gold-plated Neutrik XLR sockets, so the DNC can feed an amplifier over either cable type. Optical Audionet Link in and out connectors and a 3.5 mm 12 V trigger output let the DNC switch on with other components.

Alternatives

Audionet does not offer any other standalone network streamer in its range, so the DNC has no direct sibling of the same type.
