The sMS-2000 is a music server and network streamer from the Korean company SOtM, part of its Ultimate product group. It brings together parts that SOtM previously sold as separate upgrades - a motherboard, clock module, USB host card, Ethernet card and power supply - inside one 445 x 394 x 115 mm case weighing about 10 kg.
Key specs that matter
The core is SOtM's sMB-Q370 motherboard with a choice of Intel i7-9700, i7-9700K or i9-9900K processors, paired with DDR4 memory in 16 GB or 32 GB depending on the configuration. Storage starts with a 500 GB M.2 SSD in the standard build, rising to 1 TB with the i7-9700K option and 4 TB with the i9-9900K option. A second M.2 SSD and up to six SATA SSDs can be fitted, and SOtM states support for 48 TB and higher. Audio leaves through the tX-USBx10G host card, a USB 3.1 Gen 2 interface rated at up to 10 Gbps with USB audio class 2.0 support, an external power input jack and a USB power switch.
Engineering and use context
The sCLK-EX clock module uses an ultra low noise regulator and an active noise cancelling circuit, and a 50 ohm or 75 ohm BNC connector accepts an external 10 MHz master clock that can synchronise both the motherboard and the network card. The sNI-1G Ethernet card has its own external power input, and an extra onboard Ethernet port is also provided, with Wake On LAN on every port. Power comes from the sPM-ATX100, an ATX compatible supply with a synchronous buck topology, a second stage ripple filter on each output and protection against over voltage, under voltage, over temperature and short circuits, with all outputs locked to one clock source. The processor is cooled by an extra large passive heat sink with a flat heat pipe. Expansion covers PCIe 3.0 x16, x4 and x1 slots, two M.2 M key and two M.2 E key connectors, DisplayPort, HDMI, four USB 3.1 Gen 2 and two USB 2.0 ports. The operating temperature range is 0 to 30 degrees Celsius.
Pairing
The unit runs SOtM's Linux based Eunhasu OS, with Windows as an alternative. Supported software includes Roon Server, a DLNA renderer with OpenHome, MPD, Logitech Media Server, Squeezelite, Shairport-sync, LibreSpot, MinimServer, BubbleUPnP Server, HQPlayer Network Audio Adapter and Diretta. An external USB CD drive enables automatic ripping, and any USB audio class 2.0 DAC can serve as the output device.
Alternatives
The SOtM sMS-500 is the newer network audio player that succeeds the sMS-200, running Eunhasu with Roon Ready, Qobuz Connect and HQPlayer Embedded support.
